The War of Eustrath

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

The War of Eustrath (sometimes known as "The War for Eustrath") is a Humongous Mecha turn-based strategy game for the iPhone in a similar vein to Super Robot Wars. The plot centers on Luke Bradferd, a knight fighting to free his conquered nation of Wefrad, and Tiana, a young country girl who is thrown into the conflict after her village is attacked by enemy forces. Luke and Tia, along with several allies, fight against the opposing force of Kradion using Humongous Mecha powered by elemental energy and known as GEARs.

The game has Loads and Loads of Characters, so a Character Sheet is being written.

Tropes used in The War of Eustrath include:
  • Accidental Pervert: Luke and Harvein take turns to bear this mantle - Luke because Tiana spent some time unconcious in his GEAR's cockpit alone with him, while Harvein was accused of peeking on the girls bathing when he ran off to alert them of enemy attack.
  • Anti-Hero: Ascard. Where he falls on the scale depends somewhat on the path taken in-game. At best, he seems to be a Hurting Hero Type II. However, he swings just as easily to a much darker Type IV.
  • A God Am I: Wenceslas. The level in which he is first fought is called "The Power, God-Like".
  • The Big Guy: Harvein. His mecha is an odd example; it can handle itself competently in melee, but it has movement speed on par with the others, and specializes in extremely long range attacks. Its major disadvantage? It doesn't fly naturally, relies on ammo for its primary attacks, and it lacks a decent post-move ranged attack.
  • Born Unlucky: Sarah, to the point where she was forbidden from fortune-telling because of the disastrous results. Made fun of by Luke suggesting she should tell the fortunes of the Kradionese Army, so they would get a terrible fortune.
  • Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Luke is VERY serious towards the beginning of the game, while Tiana is rather energetic. As character development marches on, however, Tiana matures and fulfills the gentle part rather well, while Luke's brooding mostly fades.
  • Butt Monkey: Sarah, during the early game, at least.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Ascard.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Pretty much everyone gets a turn.
  • Elemental Powers:what allows the GEARs to work. The more Elemental Power (or Force, as said in-game), the more powerful the GEAR.
  • Engrish: An odd case. While the English translation is actually pretty good, some of the lines flow in an odd way and just feel out-of-place.
  • Enhanced Remake: Of an old PC game called Battle of the Youstrass, confirmed here.
  • Fragile Speedster: Several of the GEARs, including Sarah's Rhimstol.
  • Goldfish Poop Gang: The 'former brigands' recruited by Karl. They're borderline insane, but they do pose a considerable threat.
  • Humongous Mecha: The GEARs and other machines in the game.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In order for Tianerx to become an Optimus, Tiana must try to sacrifice herself for Luke. Previously, Arvel Hurst and Harvey both self-destructed to try to stop Wenceslas from killing everybody else.
  • Light Is Not Good: Ignar Trakhis is the GEAR of Heaven, and has angel-esque wings to match. He's still the Big Bad.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Tianerx especially, though Huben Draknir (heavier on the power than the speed), Fraghion (more power, less defense), and all the Optimi also could fit.
  • Mecha Expansion Pack: When Huben Draknir is repaired, and Tianerx unsealed, they add some features that only serve to make them so much more obviously badass. (Huben Draknir smooths out its battered chest and gains wings, and Tianerx gets floating orange bands around its arms and legs.) The transformation to Optimus (most scarily Legnus Optimus has similar aesthetic effects, alongside the upgrade in power.
  • A Mech by Any Other Name: GEARs.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Frederick. Luke himself says that whoever tries to fight a serious Frederick will face an unstoppable opponent.
  • One Hundred Percent Completion: Impossible. There are exactly fifteen equipable items for your GEARs. Two of them are mutually exclusive due to being on different branched path. Later on you can recruit either Ellion or Millia, but not both. Recruiting one of them gives you an equipable item. However, the one you does not recruit will show up beside the Big Bad in a stage afterwards, each of them drop a different item upon death. This means you always lose one of those three items - recruit Ellion and lose his drop, recruit Millia and lose her drop, or recruit non of them and lose the item you get from recruiting.
  • Onsen Episode: One of the battles starts while the girls are having a bath.
  • Polite Villains, Rude Heroes: Upon first meeting, Wenceslas greets the heroes in a quite civilized manner for the Big Bad, while Luke and Tiana proceed to badmouth him.
  • Power Floats: When Huben Draknir is fixed, it gains (or rather, recovers) the ability to hover. Likewise, an unsealed Tianerx can out and out fly. This is.
    • This is an inherent trait of all Optimi.
  • Power Levels: GEARs are classified based on the amount of EF used in their creation. Mechanicals are standard mooks, whereas Knights will be unique. Guardians are powerful Knights that can unleash area attacks, and if a Guardian's rider is talented enough, they may become an Optimus, the highest level of power a GEAR could ever attain.
  • Random Number God: As with other strategy games like Fire Emblem and Super Robot Wars, Eustrath features an RNG that will skew hit-rates and evasion somewhat.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Tiana goes on one after Kradionese soldiers execute her family, as does Luke when Wenceslas kills Harvey There's even a name for this in-game: Outburst.
  • Running Gag: Wenceslas is constantly referred to as a Dirty Old Man by Tiana and Luke because of his creepy-sounding attempts to get them to defect to Kradion.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Wenceslas's character goes from Affably Evil to a downright Complete Monster as the story progresses.
  • White and Grey Morality: The Wefradian heroes are undoubtably good A GEAR rider in Outburst really can't control themselves, so Luke and Tiana going Axe Crazy then can't really count, but most Kradionese are only fighting for their country, like Ellion and Millia Tiana can point out the harm of what they are doing to these two, causing one of them to do a Heel Face Turn. However, special cases, like certain Kradionese soldiers, and Wenceslas himself later in the game, truly warrant Black and White Morality.
