Her mother gives in to buy her a single toy only to take it away almost immediately, insufficiently clothes her, refuses to let her go to school, won't give her enough to eat and constantly calls her a half-wit. All this, and the girl is still so good natured she secretly brings bouquets of flowers to Kit for showing her a single kindness.
