They Live!/Heartwarming

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

This movie while cynical in the world it takes place in has a few moments that could touch your heart.

  • When Nada first arrives, he's got everything he can take with him. No home, barely any food and money and no job. Upon getting a job at the construction site he makes fast friends with Frank, who later takes him to a shanty town so he can get some shelter and a hot meal.
  • While the police raid is brutal and everyone is running scared. Nada included. He finds a homeless teenager who is lost, crying in the a near by corner and tries to get him out of harms way through a nearby alley. Only for a police car to show up in front of them. Within two seconds Nada immediately goes Papa Wolf and drags the kid with him out of sight and brings him to a nearby abandoned house to lay low. That was heartwarming enough, but upon getting him there, Nada discovers by happy accident that he just reunited the kid with his parents who were living in the shanty town with him. After they settle in, Nada is watches the window making sure no cops come storming in.
  • When he wears the glasses and insults the alien woman that bumped him in the store, he takes a moment to compliment the looks of someone he can see is human. If you look closely you can see said human nodding slightly, when he says the following line:

Nada: You? (human), you're ok. This one? (Alien) Real fucking ugly.

  • After killing alien cops and civilians in an armed robbery, a human cop tries to stop Nada. Nada however has him at gunpoint. Unlike the aliens, Nada will not kill a human being. So he tells the officer to beat it. The officer listens wisely.

Nada: Beat your feet.

  • When Nada tries to warn Frank, his friend doesn't want to hear him out. Mainly because he saw on the news that, Nada in his POV, shot and killed cops and innocent people. Making him a wanted man. Also because while he's unaware of the aliens, he's aware of their impact on the working class like himself and refuses to take the Elite side or the resistance side. In fear of dying, leaving his wife and kids broke. He tells Nada to leave. All hope seems to be lost. However, later on, he shows up when Nada is searching for the box of sunglasses. He gives him one weeks pay, so he could get out and go into hiding. However when Nada finds a the glasses, he puts it on, confirming Frank is human and he proceeds to try to get his friend to put on the glasses. Resulting in the iconic fight scene. His reasoning:

Nada: I'm trying to save you and your family's life.

  • Despite his first meeting with her, involving her breaking a bottle over her head and making him fall out of a 2 story window, Nada cares enough about Holly to try to save her from the aliens too. It seems like she reciprocates, having tried the glasses he left from the fall on. Too bad she happens to be a human collaborator who's first onscreen action is to kill Frank. Although she does plead with Nada in the end to come with her. Whether it's because she loves him, because she doesn't want him to die or just a form of manipulation is unclear, but she clearly didn't want Nada dead.
