Copyright violations

@Ecclytennysmithylove, we've just discovered that most of your most recent additions to Batman: Arkham City/Trivia are word-for-word copies of entries from the TV Tropes version of that page. I've deleted those entries (along with, admittedly, a short original passage that would make no sense without the copied material) because they are in violation of both our copyright policy and the law.

Let me make it clear -- the fact that a trope applies to a series is not copyrighted. The text used to describe how it does is. It's all right to take inspiration from TV Tropes, but you need to put any material here in your own words, not theirs.

You have been a trusted editor for a very long time; I don't want to find out that we have to go over all your edits with a fine-toothed comb and delete illegally-copied material. We're going to leave it up to you for now to correct any other instances of copyright violation -- but if we don't see any action on your part that's just what we'll have to do. And if it comes down to that we'll have to remove your autopatrolled status and check each of your new contributions against TVT every time you make one until we're assured that you're not just duplicating content wholesale any more. Continuing to do so after this warning will merit you tempbans until you stop or we give up and permaban you.

Please reply to this email to confirm that you understand.

Thank you.

I understand.

From now on, I'll just move entries that are considered YMMV/Trivia/etc tropes to their respectable YMMV/Trivia/etc pages.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

You don't need to limit your contributions, just don't do cut'n'pastes. You seem reasonably well-spoken, it shouldn't be hard to rewrite passages you think ought to be on the pages.

EDIT: Oh, please note that you were very briefly tempbanned -- pretty much while you were reading and replying -- because your most recent edit was a cut-n-paste. That ban was rescinded almost immediately.

I agree with Bob here. I know, we are missing a lot of content, but you can add it in your own words as opposed to taking it from elsewhere we aren't allowed.

Temptation is overwhelming because that would make things so much easier, but just don't.

You've proven a fine editor, so please don't do this again.

Ecclytennysmithylove (talkcontribs)

Yes, Daniel. I won't do it again.

I can at least give a partial explanation there - those examples were moved into Trivia from The Binding of Isaac's main page, based on the history; my guess is the TVT copy of the page hadn't had its examples properly sorted into subsections yet prior to the fork.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Ah, jeeze. E, my apologies for the hair-trigger response. Undoing the block now.

Ecclytennysmithylove (talkcontribs)

It’s because there’s one part that was incomplete. Maybe I should stop right now and take a break from All The Tropes until I’m ready to not do it again. I’ve been under too much stress with all the events happening recently.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Please do what is best to avoid a breakdown.

Whenever you return, I suggest leaving edit summaries in case of ambiguity like this to prevent further misunderstandings.

In the meantime, please, take off all the time you need, your health deserves more concern than this place, it will be here when you return anyway.

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

As a general pointer, it might help if we clarify the origin of the moved text in question using the edit summaries, in order to prevent ambiguity like this.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Agreed there. We mention in what we laughingly refer to as the wiki rules that we should always include an edit summary when we make changes - this is one reason why.
