This is kind of grey

I know images can be a touchy subject but while i can't claim the image (I have read the policy but still a bit grey with what I have here) i want to use as my own. It was made in the 1950s, the artist is dead, and it was made to public service (in schools and such). What's the word on this. Should I alter it a little before uploading as my own? What do I do? I'll send the image and you can be the judge.

I want to use it for the Values Resonance page. https://www.dccomics.com/sites/default/files/imce/2017/08-AUG/Superman_American_599fc05023f332.03698933.jpg

I personally feel like that'd be Fair Use, but don't take my word for it - Rob can likely provide a more definitive answer.

Copyright law in the USA in the mid-20th century has always been a bit of an odd bird - normally, one has to check whether an image fell out of copyright or the copyright was renewed, and if the artist is dead, how long ago did she or he die. But in this case, we have a clue: Superman is in the image, and DC Comics has historically been pretty good about keeping their copyrights. I'd mark this as Fair Use.
