Proposal to rename

Psychology calls this a "subordinated viewpoint".

Hollywood calls this a "low-angle shot".

Nobody calls this "Hitler Cam"... except for TV Tropes.

In accordance with our overall low-priority project to differentiate All The Tropes from TV Tropes (and to a lesser extent to avoid invoking Godwin's Law), I propose we change the name of this trope to the real-world term "Low-angle shot".

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Subordinate Shot would be a suitably tropey name IMO, but beyond that I don't take issue with the above.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

I like Umbire's suggestion.

HLIAA14YOG (talkcontribs)

Considering it's a trope directly related to being a unique figure, my alternate proposal would be "Dictator Cam". Specially because I saw low-angle shot being in use already to refer to camera angles which either focuses on a female's panties or backside.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Considering it's a trope directly related to being a unique figure,

Is it? I thought it was a trope related to being a larger-than-life figure.

GentlemensDame883 (talkcontribs)

I don't have an alternative, but I think "Subordinate Shot" can be confusing to a first-time reader. Would it mean the viewer being subordinate to the subject, or a shot of a subordinate that is framed to emphasise that inferiority?

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

Not an unfair criticism, Dame.

Lequinni (talkcontribs)

As a graduate of audiovisual communications, I'd go for the technical, real life term, either as the new trope name or as a redirect. But as a liker of tropey names, I like Horny's suggestion of Dictator Cam the most, because it both get us out of Godwin's Law and puts emphasis on the kind of scenes where we are going to find this specific type of low angled shot.

Goo Monster (talkcontribs)

I prefer low-angle, although perhaps someone can pursued me off it.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

I also am in favor of using the industry term, "Low-angle shot".

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

I'll withdraw my former recommendation. Instead, whatever the majority vote for, consider my vote added to that.

Utini501 (talkcontribs)

As someone who prefers "tropey names", I like the sound of Dictator Cam.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

I'll point out that the page quote specifically discusses this shot's use when filming superheroes. Thus, names like "Dictator Cam" aren't really appropriate, IMHO...

Also, who else uses that term?

Agiletek (talkcontribs)

Since the trope is for a single figure shot this way, perhaps "Man At Low Angle"?

To recap:

It appears that everyone agrees the page should be renamed. The only question is what the new name will be.

I suggested the industry term "Low-angle shot" -- Goo Monster and Looney Toons liked it. Lequinni liked both it and another name.

Umbire the Phantom suggested "Subordinate Shot" -- GentlemensDame883 didn't like it.

HornyLikeIAmA14YearOldGirl suggested "Dictator Cam" -- Utini501 liked it. Lequinni liked both it and another name. I pointed out that the page description discussed superheroes.

Agiletek suggested "Man At Low Angle" -- I pointed out examples of women and architecture.

So that's what we have so far.

HeneryVII (talkcontribs)

I'll vote for Subordinate Shot.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

That's four votes for "Low-angle shot", two votes for "Subordinate shot", two for "Dictator Cam", and one for "Man at low angle". It looks like we're leaning toward using the industry term.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

And there are no votes against "Low-angle shot", and fewer votes against than for "Subordinate shot". Whichever we don't use should be turned into a redirect to the page.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Sounds good to me.

Jlaw (talkcontribs)

My vote is for Low-Angle Shot.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

I'll go with consensus on this.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)
GentlemensDame883 (talkcontribs)

I'm putting out clearly as yes for "Low-Angle Shot" then... unless that would be a double-count since I'm already a no against "Subordinate Shot"?

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Nah, you're just ranking your preferences. "I don't like fish" isn't equal to "I like chocolate", after all.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

"Low-Angle Shot" it is. renaming the page now.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

And done.

Agiletek (talkcontribs)
Utini501 (talkcontribs)

Well, I sure missed a LOT of notifications while I was gone. o_O

Don't really have much to contribute since the matter's resolved, but I think the rename works just fine.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Well, I sure missed a LOT of notifications while I was gone. o_O

Sorry about that, things just... sorta happened.
