In Valkyria Chronicles 3 the squad privately give traitor Gusurg a funeral after they kill him because they understand (though not necessarily agree with) with his reasons for betrayal, and still genuinely respects his mentorship/leadership from before his betrayal. Is this an example?

Sounds to me like it's an example. Tropes Are Flexible, after all, and that doesn't fit under any of the listed related tropes.
