Remakequel.

"Remakequel", also sometimes called "legacyquel", is a portmanteau describing media (most frequently films) that are ostensibly sequels to previous properties - indeed, while they take place after the first entry/entries in that franchise, they also tell a very similar story to those media. The purpose of Remakequels are to bring older franchises to a newer audience, while still containing familiar enough faces and story beats that their original audience can appreciate.

  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the 7th Star Wars film, and takes a lot of structural cues from the first Star Wars film, additionally bringing back many of its characters: Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and Luke Skywalker. One of the new protagonists, Rey, is even a talented loner (mechanic, to be specific) who lives on a desert planet.
  • Jurassic World is a reboot of the Jurassic Park film franchise that takes place several years after the original. ," the legacy of Jurassic Park is seeped in the storyline. A technician can’t help but show off his vintage t-shirt with the park’s old logo. And when kids Gray and Zach find themselves stuck inside the park with the dinosaurs, it’s coming across the welcome center from the old park that gets them out of trouble. Not to mention that the hit of “Jurassic Park,” the T-Rex, shows up in grand fashion at the end of the movie.
  • Creed is a reboot of the Rocky franchise, with Balboa himself training and managing Adonis Creed, the son of his deceased friend Apollo, much like Mickey did for him. The sequel even matches Creed up against the son of Ivan Drago.
  • Mad Max: Fury Road is considered one to Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior - in addition to being another sequel in the franchise, it has a similar focus on the post-apocalyptic rig Max drives and the scavengers that target and demolish it.
  • Blair Witch is a 2016 sequel to 1999 film The Blair Witch Project, ignoring the events of the second film in favor of a continuation that sees the brother of Heather Donahue venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland alongside other students and local guides, following a similar path to uncover the mysteries surrounding her disappearance.
