Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Hey there! The name's Utini501, and I'm a writer. Not in any official capacity, but I like to write fanficiton as well as original fiction of my own! Archive of Our Own is where I'm mostly active, but you'll be able to find me elsewhere on the net if you look hard enough. ;)

There isn't much more to say about me other than that troping is just one of many habits of mine, and I hope to do my part in making this wiki more fun to browse! I am however willing to talk about certain tropes I like to use in my writing, as well as ones I despise (neither of which are exhaustive, lol. I'll update them when I can!)

Tropes I Love

  • Action Girl: What can I say? I like women who can kick ass, and really enjoy writing about them.
  • Adaptational Badass: As a fanfic writer, there's nothing more appealing to me than taking a lame or underutilized hero or villain and making them a force to be reckoned with. It's a recurring thing with the Marvel fics I've been planning on writing.
  • Badass and Child Duo: I've really become fond of this trope in recent times. No, it has nothing to do with the Mandalorian! Why would you ask?
  • Badass Grandpa: I will never, ever forgive TV Tropes for discontinuing this trope in particular.
  • Big Creepy-Crawlies: Bugs terrify me, big ones doubly so. And yet, I both like seeing them in fiction and writing about them. They just lend themselves too well to monster and character designs.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Whether it's cute girls that have monster ears and tails, or actual monstrous girls, I don't care: I love them!
  • Dinosaurs Are Dragons: Is it scientifically inaccurate? Hell yeah! Do I still love it? Hell yeah!
  • Fiery Redhead: Redheads are great. I love redheads! I definitely hope to write about plenty of gingers in my more human-focused works, though it hasn't quite come to pass yet.
  • Hate Sink: Sometimes, it's just nice to have a villain just be a horrible asshole with no redeeming qualities. Not only is it usually satisfying to watch them get their teeth kicked in, but I can better appreciate a villain that may just be a one-dimensional asshole than I can a villain you're supposed to sympathize with despite them being the exact opposite.
  • Hillbilly Horrors: As a Southerner, I'm not at all opposed to this trope. I think concepts like dark and ominous swamps, deformed incestuous hillbillies, and ancient horrors tied to old blood feuds make for compelling horror scenarios.
  • Our Orcs Are Different: It's always fun to see how people characterize their own versions of Orcs. I'm quite partial to the sneaky, smaller, sneering Tolkien Orcs myself.
  • Platonic Life Partners: I'm not super big on writing romance and don't think I'm that good at it, so I tend to prefer writing about men and women simply being close friends and nothing more.
  • So Bad It's Good: I'm not the kind of person who likes stuff ironically, but I do find a lot of joy in consuming bizarre or weird media like The Room and The Star Wars Holiday Special. It's just fun to laugh at the unintended humor while trying to get into the director/author's mindset and try to understand just why they make the baffling decisions that they make. Plus, I can respect a genuine attempt at making something good that simply botched the landing because if there's one thing I think this world needs, it's more sincerity.
  • Stout Strength: There's something weirdly satisfying about seeing a guy built like a powerlifter kick all kinds of ass. Thus, most of my physical powerhouses in my stories tend to have this kind of physique.
  • Sweet Home Alabama: As a native to that general region, I'm rather fond of positive portrayals of the American South. Sometimes it's just nice to see the South be a wonderful, welcoming land of hospitality, classiness, and beautiful landscape as opposed to a collective hellhole full of racist, inbred rubes. However, that's not to say that I'm opposed to Hillbilly Horrors.
  • Tropes Are Not Legos: While they're fun to catalogue, as a writer I try not to think too hard about the tropes in my work and try to focus more on simply telling a good story.
  • Tyrannosaurus Rex: A favorite dinosaur of mine ever since I was a kid.
  • Wild West: The old west was a fascinating time period, and I love all the tropes associated with them. I know I'd have a horrible time living in such a harsh environment, but I'm not gonna lie, I feel a weird sort of yearning for the personal freedom and adventure afforded by that era.
  • Yokai: Japan has some of the weirdest, coolest mythological creatures out there, and I love finding excuses to incorporate them into my stories.

Tropes I HATE

  • Anvilicious: It can be really hard to enjoy something when it's trying to ram a message down your throat even if it isn't a bad one. Yes, Wolfenstein II, I know Nazis are bad. I don't like Nazis. You don't have to retcon BJ's dad into being a cartoonishly evil, abusive, literal puppy-killing Nazi-sympathizer to drive the message home. You don't have to make ME shoot the dog, either.
  • Bumbling Dad: My dad sucked, but it doesn't make this stereotype any less groanworthy to me. This and the unofficial "bitchy rude put-upon mom" trope have given me a burning hatred for Everybody Loves Raymond, among other things.
  • Liar Revealed: Literally the only movie I can think of that pulled it off well is Galaxy Quest. Otherwise, it's just such an unpleasant trope because not only does said liar usually not bother to explain themselves, but the drama is usually cheap, artificial, and resolved minutes later. It can really drag down movies I otherwise really like, such as A Bug's Life and Klaus.
  • Political Correctness Gone Mad: Yeah, not a fan of this to say the least. Especially since it leads to needless censorship and people being afraid to take more risks with their art.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: There's nothing worse than when you're expected to sympathize with an obnoxious asshole when they've done nothing to deserve it. Ditto for when a supposedly "sympathetic" villain is either incredibly stupid or needlessly cruel.
  • World of Snark: It gets annoying when every character in a given medium is a snarky asshole. Thanks a lot, Joss Whedon.

These are mainly alternatives to tropes unique to TV Tropes, but I might push to launch a few truly unique ones.
