Weird Moon and Artsy Moon

Ah, sorry about that! Life has been getting in the way recently and I haven't had as much time to do troping (thanks exams). I asked for the merge, but I don't really know how to go about doing it. I'm assuming I just move all of the examples, from Artsy Moon over to Weird Moon, then put the page image from Artsy Moon, under "Image Links" in the Weird Moon subpage, manually go to all Artsy Moon pages to change the link to point back to Weird Moon, and request for Artsy Moon to be deleted.

Is that the basic step? Are there any problems with what I have missed?

If everything goes well, I might be able to start work in a couple of days, but it might have to wait until early December when I have more time, as my last exam is in late November.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Those are the basic steps, yes. There's also merging the trope descriptions -- if there's anything in the Artsy Moon description that isn't in the Weird Moon description, it should (probably) be added in.

No rush on when you do the work -- Real Life comes before troping, after all.

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

Well, now that exams have finally calmed down, I've gone ahead and done the merger. Artsy Moon is now an empty page, and there are only two pages that link to it -- both of which are "cleanup" templates. I've done my best to merge the trope information, and leave documents of Artsy Moon's former existence. I think the only thing now left to do is deleting Artsy Moon and its corresponding category.

A couple of admin requests...

I've been troping Kaguya-sama: Love Is War (anime) as I watched, and now I think the page is finally ready for launch. Here's the list of page to move into the main space:

Please do not move User:Ilikecomputers/sandbox/Kaguya-sama: Love Is War (anime)/Characters, which needs more time in the oven.

It also appears User:Ilikecomputers/sandbox/Central Cast of Girls is a dud, being a duplicate of Fundamentally Female Cast. That should be deleted. Also, User:Ilikecomputers/sandbox/Late Teen Hero is ready to be moved into the workshop, now that Witch Protagonist is launched.

Thank you!

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

It took me a few minutes to figure out how to move a page without moving one of its subpages, but figure it out I did. Everything's moved (or not moved) as you requested, and I put the Trope Workshop tag on Late Teen Hero.

Sorry, four days ago I was still catching up after my vacation. Done.

Regarding File:Floating in a bubble.jpg and File:Robot bird.jpg...

First off, thank you, and I think those are our first AI-generated images ever, so much wow at that.

However... while you said as part of the descriptions that you grant us a license to use them, you didn't way what license. How did you want to license them? A basic traditional right to reproduce under standard copyright? Or one of the Creative Commons licenses? Can you please clarify?

Thank you!

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

Information has been updated; now all three image are available, for reuse by anyone (because limiting it to just All The Tropes is too restrictive) under the CC-BY-SA 4.0 license.

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

I've also added a notice that the the AI system I used, in addition to me as the creator of the image, should also be attributed. Is that condition compatible with the CC BY-SA license?

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

IANAL but I don't think that was on anyone's minds during the drafting of CC-BY-SA. But elsewhere on the net, in similar situations, I've seen the system credited as well as the human. It certainly can't hurt to do so here.

Done. And thanks for letting us know about this, rather than just leaving it to sit.

Your proposed redirect "My Neighbour Totoro" has been rejected in moderation.

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

Sorry about that! I did read the page before attempting that redirect, I was thinking it falls under "if a work has different names depending on where you are, pick one of the names - preferably an English-language name on the English-language version of All The Tropes - for the work name and redirect the other regional names to whichever one you chose", considering "Neighbour" as an alternative regional name with a different spelling. Similarly, the entry for when not to create a redirect does not include "alternative spellings for words", leading to my confusion.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Generally, "alternate spellings" are misspellings. <grin>

And while we explicitly accept both British and American spellings, that policy generally refers to content. Titles, particularly titles for works, are something we need to be a little fussier about because ten years after we forked from TV Tropes we're still cleaning up a million redirects created by people there who couldn't be bothered to check that they were using the actual name of a work as opposed to what they thought it might possibly be. The ability to create a redirect to the right page name is no excuse to use the wrong one just for convenience.

That said, I did do some quick research before deciding to reject this redirect and I could not find a British release of the film using British spelling. If I turn out to have simply not cast my net wide enough to find it, I will gladly un-reject your edit, because then that will be an official alternative.

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

If you head over to https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096283/releaseinfo?ref_=ttalt_ql_dt_2, scroll down to the AKA section, the UK uses the neighbour spelling. This spelling is also used for the Ireland and India titles, although I believe that it refers to the translation of the title for their language, so it doesn't really count.

However, the second to last entry states My Neighbor Totoro should be the world-wide English title, implying that this should have been the correct title all along, so, upon reconsideration, I actually wish for this edit to stay rejected. If we do allow redirects from every single release ever in every single language, then every work on our wiki will need 20 redirects.

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

Time to reopen this discussion. I've created a redirect for Arrietty back to The Borrower Arrietty. This fits in the description "If a work has a Market-Based Title, it should be a redirect to the work (e.g., MI-5 to Spooks)." under "When To Create a Redirect" on All The Tropes:Creating New Redirects. This can be verified by going to https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1568921/releaseinfo?ref_=ttalt_ql_dt_2 and checking the title for the UK and Australia.

Please check that this fits the guidelines. If not, I will not be creating any more redirects. If it does, I'll do another one for "The Secret World of Arrietty" (US title). "The Secret World of Arrietty" is already a redirect.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

It fits... I wrote those guidelines, so yeah. No need to be so anxious about it.

Just as an FYI...

Very often potholes like [[Laputa: Castle in the Sky|Castle in The Sky]] which you recently corrected on Studio Ghibli are the result of some of our earliest cleanup of wiki data after the fork, when we were fixing work pages with wrong or abbreviated names, followed by bot runs that turned the old direct links into potholes. (There was a good reason for doing that instead of outright replacing them, but ten years later, I can't remember what it was.) There's no need to make a big fuss about them in the edit reason; when I fix stuff like that I just note "potholes" in the reason.

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the information! I always consider writing too much better than writing too little; in the former the worst is I waste somebody's time, in the latter I can seriously confuse someone. I'll take note for the future.

Umbire the Phantom (talkcontribs)

...are a free launch. You don't necessarily have to keep them in your userspace prior to moving them - per that linked page, so long as you can provide a few examples and a description to go along with the work, it should be good to go.

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

I felt like keeping them there because pages on the main space need some level of quality control. It's not fun to read a bare bones article. Sometimes I do follow the work pages are a free launch philosophy and launch them straight away, other times I prefer to develop them to an acceptable standard. Yes, I can provide a description and a few tropes, but when that's the only thing I can do, the page isn't going to be very good. With that said, thank you for the reminder.

...And, I think User:Ilikecomputers/sandbox/Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow is ready for launch. Pinging all admins to move it into the main space.

(also feel free to move User:Ilikecomputers/sandbox/Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow in accordance with All The Tropes:Works Pages Are a Free Launch)

@Labster @Looney Toons @GethN7 @Robkelk @QuestionableSanity @Derivative @SelfCloak

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow is now in the main namespace.

While Work pages are a free launch, they aren't forced to be. If you want to clean up a page before launching it, you'll be in good company; moderator @Looney Toons does the same thing. Thus, I've left Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow in your sandbox.

GethN7 (talkcontribs)

Concur, you want it season some before putting in main namespace, good idea if the quality is all the better for it.

Congratulations!

@Ilikecomputers, due to your prolific, high-quality contributions since joining the wiki, as well as your general good interactions with wiki staff, we've agreed to grant you membership in the Autopatrolled and Automoderated groups. The most immediate upshot of this is that your edits will no longer go to the Moderation queue, but will be immediately applied directly to the wiki. It's an awesome power, and we trust you to use it only for good.

Thank you! Of course I don't mind if you guys check my edits once in awhile, everyone makes silly mistakes sometimes, and it's just the wiki magic at work. I'm honored to have this privilege, and I'll make good use of it in contributing to this wiki.

Please stop adding the "Alice and Bob" category to "Playing With" pages.

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

Acknowledged. I did get a weird feeling when I spammed Alice and Bob categories on the playing with pages, as there are no further playing with entries on Alice and Bob. I will not do this again.

Your edits to "Magic by Any Other Name" and "Magic by Any Other Name/Laconic" have been rejected

5
Robkelk (talkcontribs)

In both cases, your edit reason was "use wppage template so Playing With section will show up. I may have done some things wrong, please correct in that case." However, you specified a Wikipedia page that does not exist. We don't want to send people on a wild goose chase.

If a link that should appear in the page header is not appearing, it's probably because the page is cached and showing an old version. Instead of immediately editing the page, try a purge of the cache of the page first. ("Purge" is in the dropdown menu "More" beside the search box on the default wiki skin.) If that doesn't work, try a "null edit" - delete the blank line at the very end of the page. And if both of those don't work... let us know, because something is wrong.

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

Thank you! I do wish to apologize in advance, I am quite new here and my every other edit has some admin chasing after me correcting my style. This comment has helped me a lot, and I was wondering why some of my playing with edits are not showing up. You guys are amazing :)

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

While I'm here, a while ago under my user sandbox I created the sub-page The_Wind_Rises, to work on information about the film. After it is done, it was sent to moderation, but so far it wasn't created while some of my other changes have been moderated. My hypothesis is that a bug in the moderation system may have 'ate' the page and it never showed up in the queue, but can you check just in case? Thank you, and I once again apologize for my incompetence.

Robkelk (talkcontribs)

In this case, the bug is between the keyboard and the chair - it's a human issue. We have a backlog of posts in moderation and not enough time to look at them all promptly.

My apologies for this. Please be patient...

Ilikecomputers (talkcontribs)

Sorry if I'm putting pressure on you; I do understand that you all have lives outside of this wiki. While it does suck to have to wait several days before changes are moderated, it is preferable to the alternative of spam floods and low quality edits. Anyway, thanks for the great information.
