Copyright violation

Thank you for alerting us that the page you created last year for His Lie in April was a copy of the page of the same name at TV Tropes. I have reviewed the edit history of the TVT page and determined that you are not its sole author, nor did you get and provide us with permission from the other contributors to the page to copy their work here. Consequently, in adherence to our Copyright Policy, the page has been deleted to protect the wiki from legal liability.

Consider this your first warning per How We Do Bans Around Here, specifically the item "Repeatedly posting material copied word-for-word from TV Tropes in violation of both our Copyright policy and copyright law." Technically you are well past your third violation given how many edits you've made copying TVT material to the page here over the past year-plus, but because we were lax and did not notice this was an illegally copyrighted page we will count it all as a single incident and warn you accordingly. Please be aware that repeatedly posting copyrighted material without permission will result in a tempban; restoring the deleted page will result in a ban much faster.

I apologize. I wasn't sure what to do, so I posted it here. I had no idea you had to have permission to post it here, even if it is a page written either wholly or mostly by you.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

If you are the sole author, you can grant us permission to use it. If you are not, you have to get the permission of everyone else who worked on it.

Now if you want to write your own version, leaving out or completely rewriting any contributions by other people, that's perfectly legal.

Jlgarfield (talkcontribs)

I'll see what I can do about getting permission from the only one or two other authors that made edits on it.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

That'll do. But if you do get it all, don't re-enter the page, just let us know and we'll restore it. No need for you to go through all that work if we can make it legal.

Jlgarfield (talkcontribs)

Eh, I couldn't quite get it. I could also restart the page and try and make it different than what's on TVTropes, I guess? I'm out of ideas other than that.

Looney Toons (talkcontribs)

Yes, that's pretty much what you'll need to do. I'll note that there are things you can crib from TVT legally -- in particular, as long as you write your own original descriptions for them, it is legal for you to use the list of tropes from TVT. So that should save you a little work.

You know what? You might want to check out our Works Page Guidelines. It's written more for the first-time troper, but it might give you some ideas that could help you create something different from TVT's page.
