Uta no Prince-sama

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Uta no Prince-sama (うたの☆プリンスさまっ♪ Uta no☆Purinsu-sama♪, literally "Song Prince") was originally a otome Visual Novel released by Broccoli on 2010 for the PlayStation Portable.

Ever since she first heard him sing, high school freshman Haruka Nanami has dreamt of writing a song for Hayato, a famous pop idol. To make her dream a reality, she enrolls into Saotome Academy, an elite private school designed to teach idol hopefuls and the composers that work with them the Ins and Outs of the business. While there, she gains the attention and friendship of a colorful cast of male idol hopefuls, including the cold and aloof Tokiya Ichinose, who claims to be the identical twin brother of Hayato.

Oh, did we mention that the principal is voiced by Norio Wakamoto and that one of the teachers is a trap?

Tropes used in Uta no Prince-sama include:
  • Always Identical Twins: Syo has one, though he only appears in the games. Tokiya and Hayato are also this but it's just a cover story to allow Tokiya to debut as himself.
  • Always Someone Better: Tokiya is this for Otoya, though only in the games.
  • Attractive Bent Gender: Syo, when forced to crossdress in the original game, and season 1 episode 5 of the anime.
  • Bishonen: It is an otome game, what did you expect?
  • Break The Cutie: Happens to Otoya in season 4, courtesy of Eiichi.
  • The Casanova: Ren, and it does not go unnoticed by the other guys.
  • Cast Full of Pretty Boys: Complete with a trap.
  • Catch Phrase: Hayato's "OHAYAHO!", which doubles as the title of his character song.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Natsuki sometimes comes off as this, especially in the anime.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Otoya, Masato, Natsuki, Tokiya, Ren, Syo, and Cecil. Once Quartet Night joins the series, we also get Reiji, Ranmaru, Ai, and Camus.
  • Country Mouse: Haruka in the anime. She lived in the country for most of her childhood and quickly becomes overwhelmed by the fast pace of the city when she first returns to one.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Masato, Tokiya, and Otoya.
  • Custom Uniform of Sexy: Ren wears the average uniform without the blazer and with his shirt open.
  • Dude Magnet: Haruka is this, even if she doesn't seem to notice it.
  • Eyes of Gold: Haruka.
  • Fake Twin Gambit: Tokiya does this when entering the Academy in order to try to break away from his Hayato persona and debut as himself.
  • Friend to All Children: As seen in season episode 3, Haruka. Also Tokiya, as seen in season 1 episode 8. Otoya is also shown to be this in season 2, as a result of growing up in an orphanage with a lot of other kids.
  • Genki Girl: Tomochika.
  • Gratuitous English: Many of the songs include English words and phrases in the lyrics.
    • LET'S SONG
    • Principal Saotome OWNS this trope.
  • Idol Singer: The male cast are all either idols, past idols, or trying to become idols. Tomochika, as well.
  • Ill Girl: In the anime, Haruka was this before coming to Saotome Academy
    • Also Shou, with his heart condition, although it doesn't make it into the anime.
  • Image Song: Each episode centered on a guy has a song sung by him.
  • Implausible Deniability: In the game, Haruka's ability to believe that Hayato and Tokiya are different people is astounding.
  • Ineffectual Loner: Tokiya.
  • In-Series Nickname: Tomochika is called "Tomo" by Haruka and some classmates and Masato is called "Masa" by Otoya.
  • Keet: Otoya.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Tokiya is initially insufferable and rude towards his classmates, but he defrosts over time.
  • Lethal Chef: Natsuki.
  • Lucky Charms Title: Uta no☆Prince-sama♪
  • MST: The show is simulcasted on the English version of Nico Nico Douga, which displays the video's comments while it is playing. Guess what most of the viewers decided to do.
  • Man Child: Natsuki, much to Shou's dismay.
  • Naive Newcomer: In the anime, Haruka knows next to nothing about the idol industry (due to living in the country and not having a TV) and doesn't recognize Shining Saotome and Ringo from their idol days.
  • Nice Hat: Shou usually has one.
  • Nonuniform Uniform: Shou wears a sweater instead of the blazer.
    • Same with Masato, although unusually, in the game, he carries the school's blazer with him, implying he actually wears at least three layers throughout the day.
  • No Sense of Direction: Played for Laughs when the guys think that Haruka will get lost on her way to Hayato's concert. Though they turn out to be Properly Paranoid when she does actually get lost.
  • The Quiet One: Masato and Tokiya.
  • Raised by Grandparents: Haruka was raised by her grandmother in the anime.
  • Shrinking Violet: Haruka.
  • Soap Opera Disease: In the anime, Haruka claims to have had this when she was a child. Symptoms include fainting spells when stressed and maybe her oddly colored eyes.
  • Stepford Smiler: Tokiya seems to have elements of this in his persona Hayato, but is now trying to debut as himself, not someone who forces himself to smile in order to be accepted by others.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: Every movie Hyuga-sensei stars in, it seems.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: Ringo.
