Virtua Fighter/Trivia

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

  • Defictionalization: Wolf Hawkfield became a "real" wrestler in All Japan Pro Wrestling from 1997 to 2000, being portrayed by wrestler Jim Steele.
  • Fan Nickname: The two long rectangular stages with walls on two sides in Final Showdown (Lion and Lei-Fei's stages) have been dubbed the "taco" stages. Because Leon's is colored blue, it's also clled the "Cool Ranch" stage.
  • Hey, It's That Voice!: Akira Yuki's as good at fighting as Takumi Fujiwara's at driving.
    • To a lesser extent, Jacky Bryant is voiced by Eric Kelso aka Kalas.
    • Nina Kumagaya as Aoi. Mao (or Mariah, if you will) may have traded spinning tops for Aikido, but she hasn't quite mellowed out.
    • Eileen is Fan and Tsukasa Kasuga.
    • Wataru Hatano as Jean. Sounds like Rufus has gone from envying the pretty boy in red to being the pretty boy in red!
  • Name's the Same: Kage shares the same name with characters from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX and Samurai Champloo.
  • No Export for You: Virtua Fighter 5 R (for arcade goers, anyway). This was later mitigated with the international release of Final Showdown, two years after the initial release.
    • The final revision of 4, Final Tuned, was exclusive to arcades in Japan.
  • What Could Have Been: The Arab character of Siba was removed from the first game due to the creation of Akira and the game only having space for 8 characters at the time. The addition of Akira meant a Japanese character was represented and they avoided the potential risk of offending Arab fans. His sword also meant he was unbalanced. The official statement is that he ranked low on playtests, but this is probably not totally true. He was a feature of many early screenshots too. Had the game been made a few years later, it might have included both. It's interesting to note that they haven't tried to implement Siba again in any game apart from Fighters Megamix. You would think the fan demand for him would give them a clue, although it's possibly that post 9/11, the idea of including any Arab characters in a fighting game is likely to encourage controversy.
  • Working Title: Siba's name in development is "Majido", which was a Japanese attempt at the Arabic name "Majid". He is still named this when playing as him via cheat codes in the first game.
  • Write Who You Know: Akira was actually the very last character added to the first game, replacing the Arab fighter Siba. Suzuki had been learning Hakkyoku-ken, and partially based Akira on his sensei.
