Walpurgia/Characters

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Characters from Walpurgia include:

Umbra

Caption

The self-proclaimed Cardinal Witch of Darkness and the story's main protagonist. Fueled by revenge, Umbra means to the kill the Cardinal Witches for wronging her in the past. With her shadow magic, she can manipulate the shadows in any vicinity. And she can even use shadows to create creatures and make weapons.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Action Girl: Isn't afraid to get her hands dirty one bit.
  • Anthropomorphic Personification: Of darkness, as her "title" implies. Her power over shadows coupled with her ruthless nature represents how Dark Is Evil. At the same time, her occasional moments of kindness represent how Dark Is Not Evil.
  • Big Freaking Sword: Her weapon of choice; a massive sword that doesn't reflect any light (as it's made of pure shadow).
  • Damsel in Distress: There are many moments in the story where someone must come to her rescue. Even a witch as powerful as her can still get overwhelmed.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Besides Bestia finding her in the woods when she was a child, nothing about Umbra's past gets brought up. But her obsession with revenge is a clear sign she dealt with a lot of shit growing up.
  • Dark Magical Girl: Her viciousness and foul language are all for show. Behind the shadows and the bloodlust is a very scared, very broken girl.
  • Evil Is Sexy: Even those who hate her guts admit she's quite the looker.
  • Hartman Hips: She's got a massive ass. She wasn't proud of it at first, but starts flaunting it more after taking control of the woods. How? By ditching her robe in favor of a layer of shadow that clings to her like a bodysuit. It manages to make her ass look even bigger.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She's always been this, but she invokes it after taking full control of Knock-Turn Woods. She ditches her robe in favor of a layer of shadow that clings onto her skin like bodysuit. She even ties her long hair up into a big bun, giving onlookers a full view of her ass.
  • Nominal Hero: Of the Annoyance/Revenge variety; she does what she does to get back at the Cardinal Witches. She doesn't want to kill innocents, but if that's what she's got to do to get her revenge, she will.
  • Small Name Big Ego: While a powerful witch in her own right, Knock-Turn Woods is as far as her "influence" reaches. To the rest of Walpurgia, she's a nobody.

Macchiato

Caption

A doglike creature made of pure shadow who serves Umbra, who is his creator. He's much more levelheaded than Umbra and assists her in her quest for vengeance.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:

The Expressos

Caption

A hoard of diminutive creatures that're born of shadow and under Umbra's command. Their primary purpose is to eat the corpses of whomever and whatever Umbra ends up killing.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Fed To Pigs: The ultimate fate of any enemy of Umbra's is getting eaten by these guys.
  • Flat Character: Eating dead bodies is all they do.
  • Never Found the Body: Courtesy of these guys.
  • Non-Malicious Monster: They only eat those Umbra tells them to. Most of the time, they scurry around the forest and sleep in random places.
  • Ugly Cute: A legion of black, jaundice-eyed creatures that get their sustenance from eating corpses. And yet, nobody in-universe can help but find them adorable.

Bestia

Caption

The Cardinal Witch of Fauna, who lords over the Knock-Turn Woods. Umbra's wared with her over control of the woods for years. Her primary skill is her ability to make monsters from almost anything. She also has a little bit of power over nature, as she can control certain plants, but rarely uses it.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • All of the Other Reindeer: To the point where her colleagues were pretty much waiting for Umbra to finally take her out.
  • Mook Maker: A non-video game example. She does nothing but create monsters and send them to take care of whatever or whomever is bothering her. Most of her war with Umbra consists of this.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: She's only Umbra's first target, and dies very early on before the real story begins.
  • Improbable Weapon User: She fights Umbra with a twig she imbues with magic and enlarges into a massive branch. It's more or less a staff, but she uses it more like a club. That, and it has roots at the bottom of it, which Bestia uses to bind Umbra at one point.
  • Killed Off for Real: Umbra brings her sword right down on Bestia's head, splitting the old witch's head in two and killing her on the spot. Umbra then has her Expressos devour her remains for good measure.
  • Let's Get Dangerous: When she decides to fight Umbra one on one. She takes a twig and uses her magic to turn it into giant, magic-imbued branch. She's even bold enough to attack Umbra head-on and attempt to beat her head in with it.
  • Sorting Algorithm of Evil: A frail old woman who lives in a pest-infested hovel and wants respect from her colleagues. She also relies too much on the monsters she creates. Once she's forced to fight Umbra one on one, it doesn't take long for Umbra to have the hag at her mercy.
  • Starter Villain: She's got countless creatures at her command and the respect of the woods' inhabitants. But she has next to no influence on anything or anyone else in Walpurgia. Even Umbra knows killing her would have no affect on how the kingdom functions.
  • Wicked Witch: A classic example, as she's a malicious old woman with magical powers that lives in a forest.

Agua

Caption

The Cardinal Witch of Water, who's taken it upon herself to find and kill Umbra for killing Bestia.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Berserk Button: Apparently, being called a bitch. The blonde girl Umbra saved in an early chapter learned this the hard way.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: While she's monstrous enough to murder a child for calling her a bitch, she's still got enough humanity to put the various animals and creatures of the woods to sleep for a couple hours to keep them quiet instead of just slaughtering them all.
  • Scary Black Woman: A black female witch who's just as intimidating than Umbra, if not more.
  • Shadow Archetype: To Umbra, ironically enough: they're both violent witches who dispose those their victims by having them eaten by creatures. But Agua is essentially what Umbra would be like if Umbra was a full-on monster and had no respect for those she deems "filthy".
  • Sorting Algorithm of Evil: Much younger than Bestia and is also much more ruthless, having no qualms killing a child for a small slight, and intends to face Umbra head-on than hide behind countless monsters.
  • The Stoic: Though not on the same level as Himmela, who's this to an inhuman degree.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: Her Establishing Character Moment does a good job of showing she'll put up a much bigger fight than Bestia.
  • Would Hurt a Child: She kills an innocent little girl for the terrible crime of calling her a bitch.

Himmela

Caption

The Cardinal Witch of Light, the Mother of All Witches, the Queen of Walpurgia, and #1 on Umbra's hit list. Years ago, she and Bestia made a deal: if Bestia kills Umbra, Himmela will expand Bestia's territory. However, due to Bestia's insistence on using monsters to attack Umbra and wasting loads of time in the process, Himmela decides to give Bestia an ultimatum: either Bestia kills Umbra without the use of a creature, or Himmela kills both Umbra and Bestia.

She specializes in light magic, a very powerful, very versatile form of magic that effectively makes her a Physical God.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: A ten-year-old witch who happens to be the sovereign of both an entire kingdom and her own brethren.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Appears before Bestia in a blinding flash of light in her home and asks her why she hasn't killed Umbra yet in a soft, wispy voice. When Bestia tells Himmela she needs more time, Himmela responds with a serene-sounding "bullshit", then proceeds to beat on Bestia and threaten to kill both her and Umbra if she doesn't hurry up and complete her part of their deal, then disappears in another blinding flash of light... not before insulting Bestia's home and stating her shoes got dirty from merely standing on the floor.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Doesn't raise her voice one bit when beating on Bestia... let alone when she says "bullshit" to Bestia saying she needs more time to kill Umbra.
  • Precision F-Strike: This ten-year-old girl outright calls Bestia's claims that she needs more time "bullshit". And still in a cute, soft voice, no less.
  • Light Em Up: Has power over light, and can use it to do pretty much anything.
  • Little Miss Badass: She may look and sound like a cute little girl, but if her titles are any indication, she's more than capable of killing anyone who dares to mess with her.
  • The Stoic: Her expression never changes and her voice never gets any higher than a soft wisp, not even when she's swearing or beating up on someone.
  • Worlds Strongest Witch: "Mother of All Witches" is one of her titles for a reason.

Magnum

Caption

Bestia's greatest creation (in more ways than one), who means to kill Umbra to avenge its creator.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Gag Penis: Its dick's horrific in every sense of the word. Umbra likes it, though, as she licks her lips when she sees it. Her opinion changes very quickly, however, once Magnum pins her down and rips her robe open...
  • Killed Off for Real: It dies from losing too much blood due to Fuller slicing its Gag Penis off, and then Macchiato devours its corpse (yes, Gag Penis included).
  • Meaningful Name: It's both Bestia's greatest creation and the most well-endowed of all her creations.
  • Non-Malicious Monster: The only thing that makes it a monster is its willingness to rape and kill Umbra as revenge for killing Bestia. Besides that, it's a rather peaceful creature.
  • No Name Given: "Magnum" is just what Umbra (and the narrative) calls it. Bestia never gave him a name.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: Smarter than Bestia's previous monsters and more agile than Bestia herself, and would've raped and killed Umbra had her powers not overloaded when they did.

The blonde-haired girl

Caption

A young, blonde-haired peasants girl who lives in Knock-Turn Woods. She's sent by the adults of her village to find food, but ends up only finding a lake, where she's ambushed by a giant snake monster Bestia created, which tries to eat her. Umbra indirectly saves her (as she encountered the snake before, but forgot to kill it) by cutting the snake to pieces, and lets the girl bring its remains back home for food. Since then, the girl becomes a fan of Umbra, and is one of the very few peasants that's not bothered by Umbra killing Bestia and taking the woods over. However, when she goes back to the lake and encounters Agua, who means to kill Umbra, the girl makes the mistake of calling Agua a bitch, which results in the Cardinal Witch brutally killing the girl.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Killed Off for Real: Agua chokes the girl so hard her windpipe collapses. And then she drops her on the ground and stomps on her neck for good measure. And then she wakes up the animals she put to sleep and has them devour the poor, innocent peasant's corpse.
  • Fed to Various Woodland Creatures: Agua makes the animals she put to sleep eat the girl's corpse whilst still under her control.
  • Red Shirt: Essentially existed to demonstrate how ruthless Agua is, and how she isn't a pushover like Bestia and won't hesitate to kill anyone that tries to hinder her.
