Emma Grace Frost/White Queen

First appeared as a villainess who tended to underdress for the occasion. Currently, she's a heroine with less than heroic tendencies, and still likes to underdress. Has (or had; she killed one) two mutant sisters, and a gay brother who went insane after their father had him institutionalized.

Abusive Parents: Her father was cold and emotionless and encouraged his children to play mindgames with each other. Her mother was a neglectful drug abuser.

Cool and Unusual Punishment: She will make you do some really weird things using telepathy: for example, 48 hours of uncontrollable vomiting upon hearing the word "parsley".
Corrupt Corporate Executive
Dark and Troubled Past: Her father was cold, uncaring, sadistic and physically abusive, her mother was a neglectful drug user, her older sister was identical to their father, and her younger sister couldn't care less about her. The only family member who cared about her became a drug addict (thanks to his father's horrible treatment to him), and when she thought things would be better to her, her friend was killed in front of her, another friend was a bitch who manipulated her, and her Love Interest dumped her because she was a mutant. She also used to enjoy torture, mind-rape, followed by setting hunting dogs on the nightly victims (yes, really), corporate corruption, manipulation, deceit, and forcing opponents to kill themselves during her villain years. Shaw required her to help killing her two best friends to become White Queen.
Deadpan Snarker
Depending on the Writer: Scott Lobdell's version had almost nothing in common with the Corrupt Corporate Executive supremacist Mind Rape Cold-Blooded Torture fetischist that she used to be. Instead, she became a excellent teacher doing genuinely good actions while feeling good about it. However, later in Generation X, she was strongly hinted to have murdered a police officer looking into her sister's death (at Emma's hands). Grant Morrison and some other writers returned her closer to her roots again, according to some it made her more interesting, but played her as a complete The Hedonist Jerkass, which sat badly with those who were introduced to her through Generation X, because it put all the Character Development she had during seven years in a trash bin. Later other writers attempted to either return her to the less extreme portrayal or attempt to integrate the two.
Defrosting Ice Queen: She is in no danger of defrosting completely anytime soon. Since she was already defrosting in the Generation X, but then Morrison reverted her into even more of an ice queen than when she was a villain, any defrosting now still seems like a regression. However, in some chapters, she seems to be melting.
Depending on the Writer: A Broken Bird with a Sugar and Ice Personality, trying to atone for her past sins and just wanting to be loved, or an amoral Jerk Sue Sadist Teacher with no sense of ethics who is praised for being a textbook extreme sociopathic serial-rapist, torture-fetishist, supremacist, and otherwise all-around Bastard Girlfriend? Basically, the answer seems to be that she has been portrayed as two (three, four...) entirely different types of people over the years.

The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Her father had her compete with her sisters for the right to be his heir (her brother had the good sense to stay out of it. Consequently, he was the sibling she was closest to). Her rivalry with her eldest sister, Adrienne, became so bad that it eventually went fatal.
Good Feels Good: In a number of occasions, she had expressed how much she was trying to be a good person and liked to do "the right things". She does have a bad conscience though, enjoys earning approval from Scott, and has been praised for a number of good deeds, although recurrently a bit extreme. However, she seems to enjoy earning approval from Scott, and some of her teammates or students.
Guilt Complex: As explicitly stated on Astonishing X-Men #18.

Head-Tiltingly Kinky: Less than her time in relationship with Sebastian Shaw, but as seen during the Morrisson run, still maintains her core personality. Of course, Doctor Nemesis once ordered her around, while threatening to destroy every fetish-wear store on the planet if she didn't comply.
The Hedonist: Depending on the Writer.
Heroine With An F In Good: Occasionally improves.
Heel Face Turn: After a fashion. It's kind of funny, she just sort of "fell into" hanging with the X-men. She was comatose for a long while and in their care, and revived right in the middle of the big Phalanx mega-crossover. She escaped with the rest of the X-men and, having nowhere else to go, just wound up helping them.
Hyper Awareness
- Living Lie Detector: She doesn't even need to use her powers to do it.
Jerkass Woobie: Her background makes her qualify for this, and in addition Emma lost all of her students three times, was the sole survivor of a massacre that killed more than 14 million people, and struggles with herself a lot for her past (and present) morally questionable acts.
Jerk Justifications: Emma was originally presented as a textbook sociopath, somebody extremely inclined towards being very bad, who has no illusions about the "severe warts on her soul", on-off trying to learn how to be good, and stumbling along the way a lot. But despite her aloof behavior and extreme methods, she genuinely cares about the mutant race, her students and Cyclops.
Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite her aloof behavior and extreme methods, she genuinely cares about the mutant race, her friends, her students and Cyclops.
Karma Houdini: She pays in occasional bad conscience for some of the many horrible things she does, and the tragedies of losing her students, but it's never enough to make her stop doing very morally objectionable things.
Kindhearted Cat Lover: Well, maybe not exactly kindhearted, but she's a cat lover...
Kuudere: During Generation X, beneath her aloof and apathetic behavior, Emma was a tortured soul who just want to be loved and be trusted by her teammates. This was carried over by some writers in most recent X-Men books.
Mama Bear: Seriously, do NOT threaten her students. ...On the other hand, originally (as of the Firestar mini) she regularly tortured them when dissatisfied with their progress or wanted to get a point across. She is currently trying to be a better teacher, however, but is still not above occasionally violating them if she deems it necessary, such as the Elixir case. In her defense, Elixir had just attacked Colossus, one of her best friends, and others X-Men had done worst threats to their own students.

Meaningful Name: In her villain days, she wasn't really evil in an "ice queen" manner, and in fact outwardly played the role of a benevolent friendly and somewhat nerdy headmaster, so "Frost" didn't really mean anything until Morrison decided it did.
Mind Rape: She thoroughly loves this trope.

- In a ironic twist, out of all the New Mutants, she has the most relaxed friendship with Sam Guthrie.

And telepathy that she rarely uses, despite being nearly on par with Emma Frost.
- The reason she never uses her telepathy is because she turns it all inward to bolster her psychic defenses. Her ability to resist telepathy when she does this is second to none.

I Just Want to Be Special: Husk was revealed as this. Her brother was already the super-hero Cannonball, and she tried everything she could to get mutant powers to develop, almost killing herself a few times. Finally she just about gave up, crying and clenching herself... when her skin started flaking off like old wallpaper. She ripped and shredded and tore herself up, which * for anyone else would have been scary as hell, but for her, it was the happiest moment of her life.

Magic Pants: Husk has the ability to transform her skin into any material she can think of; but she must tear off the existing layer to do so. This results in her being naked a fair amount of time, but censor steam is not used in all scenes if her new skin serves the purpose of costume. - Judging by the fact that she's shown able to shape her armor to a certain degree, this is possibly a case of Fridge Brilliance - She's a young superhero at the start of her career and, much like Kitty Pryde at that stage, simply hasn't settled on her "look" yet.

Identical Stranger: An Author's Saving Throw eventually revealed that Xorn was really really a guy who happened to look just like Magneto.
Man in the Iron Mask: Absolutely necessary, otherwise his head, which is a star, would basically kill everything around him.

Horror Hunger: Cloak has this for a vaguely defined kind of human Life Energy, represented as light. It's generally not an issue because his partner Dagger naturally generates an excess of the stuff, but on one occasion when she'd abandoned him he came near to killing several innocent people.

Teleporters and Transporters: Cloak can teleport via the "Darkforce Dimension," which his cloak is a portal to. He can take passengers, but it's a pretty traumatizing ride if his partner Dagger isn't around to ameliorate the effects.

Action Girl: Let’s see, she’s been trained in the arts of survival and war since she was a child, by one of Marvel’s most iconic anti-heroes. She also carries a BFG.
All Your Powers Combined: So far her power set's being kept deliberately vague, but so far she seems to be a power-copier like Mimic.
- Most of the time she just copies Cable's power of "shooting a really big gun."
Beware the Nice Ones: She really, really would just love to try to be a normal girl. But don’t try to hurt her Lights. Ever.
Break the Cutie: Her entire childhood has pretty much been one long list of people trying to do this to her. The fact that it hasn’t succeeded says a lot about her character.
Crazy Prepared: When she decides to go to Alaska to figure out what happened to her mother, she packs enough supplies and weaponry for a small army—and then has to be told that it’s not really necessary. Justified by the fact that she grew up in a Crapsack World that was long, long After the End, while being hunted by an Ax Crazy ex-hero. Did we mention she was raised by one of the Marvel Universe’s consummate soldiers and survivors?
Daddy's Girl: Cable's not her father, but he might as well be.
Expy: The editors and staff at Marvel have been playing her up as one of these for Jean Grey from practically Day One, even putting the Phoenix effect around her in promos (though nowhere in-story). So far, reception's been...mixed.
- Though, in Hope’s defense, she really doesn’t act like Jean Grey. She’s much more like her adoptive father and grandfather.
Fiery Redhead
Good Is Not Nice: Well, what do you expect from someone raised by Cable?
Laser Guided Tykebomb: Sort of, and sort of subverted; Cable raises her and protects her for the explicit purpose of saving the mutant race, but he doesn't really know how she's going to do this, so he can't teach her anything directly related to that task.
Meaningful Name: Justified, since Cable, the person who named her, knew about her destiny from the start.
- Strictly story-wise, she was actually named after another deceased Hope who was Cable's wife for a time and acted as a mother-figure for the younger Hope.
Messianic Archetype: Though not The Messiah, personality-wise... being raised by Cable doesn't do wonders for an idealistic mindset.
Naive Newcomer: After a childhood travelling through increasingly desolate futurescapes, she's ecstatic on arriving in in the consumerist paradise of the 21st century.
What the Hell, Hero?: She does not approve of the way Cyclops runs the team.
