Yakuza Girl

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

Yakuza Girl – Blade Shikake no Hanayome ("Yakuza Girl - The Blade-Wielding Bride") is a manga written by Masaki Motonaga and drawn by Yu-Go Okuma.

It started in February 2008, in modern day Japan on the grounds of Daihon Academy (Daihon Gakuen). The manga follows the protagonist Senguu Fumihiro as he enters the aforementioned academy, claimed to be one of the most prestigious in the entire country, to find a wife and thus satisfy the wish of his grandmother (who wants to see her great grandchildren before passing away). Of course, knowing absolutely nothing of what he sees as a top-level school, Fumihiro is caught completely off guard when he learns that technically every student and teacher of Daihon is in fact a wielder of supernatural skills and powers. Worst, however, is that the students, aggregated in "clans", are allowed to brutally murder each other -- even their grades are based upon their enemies' death toll (i.e. the number of students of enemy clans they killed). In such an absurd scenario, Fumihiro's aid comes from Akari, the girl to whom he proposed when he saw her for the first time. She, and later he, are part of the Gusha Senmetsu Clan.

On a side note, one of the most peculiar features of Daihon, after its crazy-murderous-absurd student population, is a black, cylindrical tower that sits in what seems to be the center of the school compound, atop of which floats a black, translucent orb containing a World War II-era American B-29 Superfortress heavy bomber. As for now, it appears that the plane is way more than scenic display, and Fumihiro's newly acquired powers seems to be connected to the stasis-bound aircraft in more ways than one. It is later revealed in the final chapters of the series that the heavy bomber is actually the original Enola Gay, the WWII aircraft that would drop the Little Boy atomic bomb on Hiroshima. This event was stopped by the predecessor to Fumihiro's power of 'Cause and Effect', Major Narukawa, who trapped the aircraft in a sphere of frozen time. This divergence in the timestream resulted in the world of Yakuza Girl. Narukawa has remained inside the cylindrical tower until present day, all the while using his powers to keep the bomber frozen in time. Fumihiro, after manifesting his abilities, was chosen to be the successor of this responsibility.

Tropes used in Yakuza Girl include:
  • Accidental Pervert -- Senguu once, and Akari didn't mind...
  • Action Girl -- Every girl in the manga is pretty much this type. Except for the girls that Hakkou Ichiu clan leader rides on.
  • All Amazons Want Hercules -- Reiko admits that she only wants or will have Senguu because he has the strongest power.
  • Alternate History -- What the world they live in is.
  • Always Save the Girl -- As Senguu puts it once, "Even if Everyone else[1] gets eaten, we[2] can live!".
  • Anguished Declaration of Love -- They never really stop doing this.
  • Anti-Air -- Ariwara Kotohiko and Asikai Kagefumi of the Gusha Senmetsu Clan act as this during their fight with the Yaguruma Clan
  • Anti-Hero -- Senguu starts out as a type 1 but once he gains his powers he joins the rest of the cast at type IV. Well those that can be called heroic at all.
  • Anti-Magic -- Senguu, Akari, and Ariwara Kotohiko's class teacher's Chivalrous Power.
  • Attempted Rape -- Akari is almost raped by a person trapped in their monster form
  • Badass -- Suffice to say everyone who is able to survive in this school counts.
  • Bandage Babe -- Akari on occasion.
  • Bare Your Midriff -- Most females.
  • Berserk Button -- Just try to hurt his future bride and you'll know what Senguu will do.
    • Do not mess with Reiko around Akari
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Reiko. She seems to act so nice. However, she forced herself on Senguu. She showed no real concern for Akari and her broken sword. Indeed, for all of Akari's Undying Loyalty to her, Reiko repays it by treating Akari like a pawn in a chess game, and pretty much says so right to Akari's face as she dies and forces her powers on Akari in order to complete her "plan", whatever that's supposed to be. Reiko, underneath that nice exterior, is actually a Complete Monster.
  • Boob Bite -- Senguu bit Reiko's boobs to get his Chivalrous Power.
  • Bottomless Magazines -- Any ranged weapon Chivalrous Power that was shown.
  • Class Representative -- Senguu is technically the class rep for his class because the previous one died the day before he transferred in so he got the job.
  • Clothing Damage -- Frequently, but normally the person gets damaged too when that happens.
  • Cooldown Hug -- Akari gives one to Senguu during his Superpower Meltdown. She also ends up up kissing him then.
  • Cry Cute -- Akari while learning to swim, it's adorable.
  • Damsel in Distress / Badass in Distress -- Akari after her sword breaks
  • Dude in Distress -- Senguu until he gets his powers
  • Engaging Conversation -- Senguu to Akari while she is bathing. First words out of his mouth to her, and he will be damned if he didn't mean every word.
  • Everything's Better with Dinosaurs -- They threw a Kronosaurus into the pool. How and where they got the damn thing are not explained.
  • Eyepatch of Power -- Reiko along with a few other characters.
  • The Faceless -- Izumi Masakuni of The Gusha Senmetsu Clan along with every other part of his body. He is a box that limbs come out of.
  • Gambit Pileup -- Just about everyone has some sort of plan or another. Many revolve around the nuke in the sky and Senguu's power.
  • Grey and Gray Morality -- Everyone is this story are part of clans that murder people at the drop of a hat.
  • Gorn -- Oh dear heads do tend to fly.
  • The Gunslinger -- Ariwara Kotohiko and Asikai Kagefumi in the Gusha Senmetsu Clan use gun Chivalrous Powers.
  • Handsome Lech -- Willard Ackroyd though he rarely has a chance to show it.
  • Hot Chick with a Sword -- Akari! Until it gets broken
  • Hot Springs Episode -- Well the Gusha Senmetsu Clan has an outdoor bath.
  • Kill'Em All -- It's hard to tell exactly who lives and dies at the very end, what with all the time shenanigans and alternate universe going around, but don't become too attached to the characters.
  • Les Yay -- Reiko and pretty much every girl in her clan.
  • Love Flowers -- Itagaki's the leader of clan Hakkou Ichiu gets these in his introduction.
  • Love Potion -- Of the aphrodisiac verity used by Reiko used it at least twice that we know of
    • Once to seduce, steal/absorb a man's Chivalrous power, and then kill him.
    • The second time she uses it on Senguu, and while he can't help himself while under the influence, they at least kiss, he later claims he saved his chastity for Akari rather insistently especially since he does not have clear memories of that night.

  • Nice Hat --Asukai Kagefumi of the Gusha Senmetsu Clan.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown -- Senguu ripped the guy to pieces who attempted to rape Akari in front of him. He didn't even stop once the guy was already dead.
  • Not What It Looks Like -- Akari sees Reiko possibly raping Senguu, and think it is consensual. This really messes with her seeing as she is not inernally warring with her Undying Loyalty to Reiko and her new crush on Senguu.
  • Nuclear Weapons Taboo -- Averted hard: The Enloa Gay is in the sky the entire series with a live nuke in it.
  • Official Couple -- Akari and Senguu

  • Undying Loyalty -- Akari is utterly devoted to Reiko. She grows out of this as the series goes on, but never fully, and never enough to say no.
  • Unwitting Pawn -- Itagaki, and by extension the entire Hakkou Ichiu Clan, is one for Willard Ackroyd
  • The Vamp -- Reiko
  • Waif Fu -- Most woman are rather tiny for their power, but Akari takes the cake in that she does not use Chivalrous Powers to fight just her sword skills.
  • Weak but Skilled -- Akari's chivalrous power is weak, but she is highly skilled with the sword Reiko gave her.
  • What Is This Thing You Call Love? -- Akari has no idea what love is at first.
