A Certain Magical Index/Characters/Kamisato Faction

Everything About Fiction You Never Wanted to Know.

This page covers the Kamisato Faction, the group of characters based around Kakeru Kamisato that is first introduced in New Testament Volume 14. Note that there will be significant spoilers up to this point in the series, as it is otherwise impossible to describe the faction.

Kakeru Kamisato

Another self-proclaimed Ordinary High School Student, with a special power in his right hand - his, however, is known as World Rejector. Like Touma, he's compelled to help those in need, and has gathered a powerful group of girls he's previously helped. He first appears at the end of NT Volume 13, where he effortlessly banishes all of the surviving Magic Gods to a new world (save Nepthys and Othinus).

  • Alliterative Name
  • Brought Down to Normal: In NT Volume 15, Yuiitsu severs his right hand and thus steals World Rejector from him. This is also a case of Brought Down to Badass, as he proves to be a competent fighter even without the power (albeit with the help of his faction). He gets the hand back permanently at the end of NT Volume 17, but can't transplant it back on as he now has conflicted desires and would banish himself if he used it.
  • Character Tic: In several appearances, he attempts to crack his neck joint, only to fail. This is actually an attempt to be more interesting, not having any meaning in itself. Interestingly, he first manages to do it successfully when he realizes that Touma disagrees with him.
  • Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: World Rejector lets him do this with far greater ease than Imagine Breaker does for Touma. In his very first appearance, he banishes both Nepthys and Niang Niang from the world, the former only "surviving" due to having her organs outside her body. And before that, he did the same to many other Magic Gods off-screen. He doesn't manage to do this to the Invisible Thing, however.
  • Foil: For all his similarities to Touma, there are also clear differences. World Rejector lets him send his target into their ideal world, essentially drowning them in an illusion. Contrast Imagine Breaker, which destroys illusions and forces the target to confront the world as it is. Kakeru only received his power recently, meaning that he's far closer to an actual ordinary person than Touma (who was born with Imagine Breaker).
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He's tricked by Yuiitsu into activating World Rejector while having conflicted desires in his heart, and is therefore sent to a new world.
  • I Just Want To Be Normal: He doesn't appreciate having World Rejector at all, and hates the Magic Gods for (even unintentionally) giving it to him. This is partly because he doesn't think that someone like him could attract the attention of so many girls, and so believes that their minds have been warped by his incredible power.
  • Logical Weakness: World Rejector won't work at all on someone who has no conflicting desires in their heart.
  • Meaningful Name: His name has the alternate reading "the gods' village is broken".
  • Ordinary High School Student: Like Touma, he claims to be this, even in extraordinary circumstances. Unlike Touma, he really was one until he received World Rejector.
  • Red Right Hand: Art of him shows that his right hand isn't as pale as the rest of his body.
  • Unwanted Harem: Very much so. He believes that, as someone who was genuinely ordinary until recently, there's no way so many girls would be interested in him without World Rejector. He realizes that this isn't the case after his right hand is stolen, yet his faction treats him in the exact same way.
  • Walking Spoiler
  • The Worf Effect:
    • Effortlessly defeats two Magic Gods in his first scene, and mentions having done the same to many more.
    • When he clashes with Touma, World Rejector overpowers Imagine Breaker. However, the resulting Invisible Thing actually overpowers World Rejector and injures Kakeru. The latter is noteworthy as Othinus, even before getting her full power, easily crushed the Invisible Thing. Kakeru claims that this is because World Rejector isn't instant, and so it didn't have time to fully affect the Invisible Thing... but it's uncertain if this is the truth. One interpretation is that the Invisible Thing is a completely independent being from Touma and lacks conflicting desires, so it is immune to World Rejector.

Ellen

Neither a magician nor an esper, Ellen is a specialist in tracking and analysis.

  • Lethal Chef: Because she tries experimenting in the kitchen, her "cooking" becomes something that terrifies the other members of the faction - the same people who'll take on Kaiju without hesitation.
  • Nerves of Steel: She isn't bothered when Sample Shoggoth attempts to attack her, merely commenting drily that it's dangerous.
  • Rapunzel Hair: It literally touches the ground.
  • The Smart Gal
  • Super Senses: Her sense of smell is good enough that she can detect specific hormones in a person's scent. This allows her to figure out that Fran is actually a spy from the Anglican Church.

Claire

A Gemstone esper whose body is similar to a plant's.

  • Cyborg: Her constitution allows her to merge with technology and control it.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: She can survive being cut in half - so, naturally, she's the one to suffer this fate at Salome's hands, to establish the latter's reputation.
  • Green Thumb: She can control other plants.
  • Healing Factor
  • Plant Person: Her body is similar to a plant at the cellular level. Large tropical flowers grow from her back and the sides of her head. She even wilts in hot conditions and needs watering.

Elza

A magician who utilizes something similar to a Kokkuri to control copper coins.

  • Japanese Delinquents: She tries to give off the image of one, but several aspects of her personality detract from this.
  • Noodle Incident: How she first became part of the Kamisato Faction. Apparently, she fell from the sky on top of Kakeru while missing her underwear, and said underwear became the key to solving the problem.

Salome

A magician whose magic is based around the Celtic sea god Manannan. She is an infamous mass-murderer, and is considered dangerous and uncontrollable by her own allies.

  • Ax Crazy: She has this reputation, though it borders on Informed Attribute. In her actual appearances, she's one of the saner members of the faction, even being willing to work with outsiders to prevent Kakeru from going too far.
  • Combination Attack: After absorbing the traits of multiple weapons, she can combine them into new types of attacks.
  • Cyborg: Her body is entirely artificial, with her original organs given as an offering to her god. Unlike most other examples in the series, her cybernetic body doesn't use any technology from Academy City. It gives her supernatural strength even without her magic, and lets her survive losing limbs or even the entire lower half of her body.
  • The Dreaded: She's feared even by the other members of the Kamisato Faction, to the point that she's normally kept sedated.
  • Enemy Mine: She allies with Touma in NT Volume 15.
  • Not Blood Siblings: She was raised with Kakeru but has no blood relationship with him. The latter part is lampshaded repeatedly, including by herself.
  • Power Copying: Her main power, called "External Offering". By destroying a weapon with her own hands, she gains its traits and can incorporate them into her own attacks. This even applies to weapons created by supernatural means, like Mikoto's iron sand swords. However, if she doesn't destroy a weapon for three minutes, she loses all her accumulated abilities.
  • Stripperific: Her normal outfit is a transparent raincoat. Supposedly, it's to protect her cyborg body from dust, yet it doesn't cover her legs (and that doesn't explain why it has to be transparent).
  • Won't Work On Me: Her cyborg body makes her immune to Yuiitsu's shockwave attack.

Fran Karasuma

A Gemstone esper who claims to have been abducted by aliens. She is the faction's information warfare specialist. This is merely a cover - she's actually a spy from the Anglican Church, a magician whose magic pertains to stars.

  • Animal Motifs: A rabbit. She has accessories that resemble a rabbit's ears and tail, and her favorite mascot is Bunny Grey.
  • Becoming the Mask: While she entered the Kamisato Faction as a spy, eventually she fell in love with Kakeru for real.
  • Colony Drop: She brings down her space station in NT Volume 17, crashing it onto Academy City.
  • Cuteness Proximity: She absolutely adores Bunny Grey, a British mascot, in the same manner as Mikoto and Gekota.
  • Enemy Mine: Allies with Touma in NT Volume 17, to rescue Kakeru.
  • Foil: To Motoharu. Both are spies sent from the Anglican Church to infiltrate another faction. Both have extensive knowledge of both science and magic. This is even lampshaded by Motoharu, who calls himself "the Kamijou Touma version of Karasuma Fran".
  • Foreshadowing: There are several indications of her original allegiance, prior to The Reveal. She knows how to create a coded message for Index and Othinus to interpret, and that Luca is a magician who'd be useful for rescuing Kakeru, both of which imply significant knowledge of magic. Her favorite mascot is British in origin, indicating that she's from the Anglican Church.
  • Kill Sat: Her Bunny Grey Messenger is a less-lethal version of this. It can produce microwaves powerful enough to inflict a 55 degree Celsius heatwave on Academy City during winter.
  • The Mole: Sent by the Anglican Church to spy on the newly-formed Kamisato Faction. Though as noted under Becoming the Mask, she became more loyal to them than to her superiors.
  • Walking Spoiler
  • Walking Swimsuit Scene: She constantly wears a bikini, even after the heat wave in Academy City is over.

Luca Toyama

A pirate-themed magician specializing in voodoo, who uses the deity Legba Atibon.

  • Badass Driver: She can drive vehicles up to mid-sized motorcycles, with enough skill to deal with pursuit by the other members of the Kamisato Faction.
  • Enemy Mine: She's convinced to switch sides to Touma and Fran in order to save Kakeru in NT Volume 17.
  • Eyepatch of Power
  • Magic Knight: Fitting her pirate theme, she carries and uses a cutlass.
  • Older Than They Look/Younger Than They Look: Her control over subjective time lets her change her apparent age, becoming a child or an adult at will.

Maya Goryou

One of the more unusual members of the Kamisato Faction, Maya is a ghost.

  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: She can grow to an enormous size, becoming capable of crushing buildings with ease. This form is vulnerable to strong scents, which disrupt the balance of scent needed to maintain her form.
  • Gag Boobs: They're mentioned to be so large she has trouble seeing her feet. This causes her to be more destructive than necessary in giant form, as she can't see where she steps.
  • Odd Friendship: With Olivia.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: She has a physical body, and is capable of eating and drinking. Her existence normally depends on Censers, small drones that emit sound and aromas outside the range of human perception to create an artificial haunted ground.
  • Playful Hacker: One of her roles in the faction is information warfare.

Olivia Sawai

A cosplayer who makes use of both science and magic.[context?]
