- Based on a True Story: The car Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was inspired by several real race cars, and the start-of-film sequence showing the car and its crash is loosely based on elements of the first Chitty's history.

- Not Even Bothering with the Accent: After taking a lot of criticism for his phony Cockney in Mary Poppins, Dick Van Dyke completely dispensed with a British accent in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, despite the fact that his character's father and two children all had one.

- To the film: The video for Barenaked Ladies's song "One Week" includes a sequence that duplicates the "dolls" scene from the film.
