Ranma and Akane: A Love Story/Trivia
Trivia about Ranma and Akane: A Love Story includes:
- I Always Wanted to Say That: On the part of Hallstrom, who mentions in the author's note at the end of chapter five that he always wanted to use the Written Sound Effect that appears in the chapter.
- Shout-Out:
- Among the vendors summoned by Nabiki to profit off of the sea-change in the attitudes of male Furinkan students on Ranma's first day there is one hawking "Caannndy, Bon-Bons, onna stick!" and Nabiki is overheard negotiating her loans with "just for you... and I'm cuttin' me own throat".
- In-Universe to Rocky and Bullwinkle:
"Hey, Ranchan, watch me pull a dummy out of a cinder-block!" |
- To In Nomine, when the demon lord Delaniel is described as having a Word -- for those unfamiliar with the game, this is the thing he is the Demon of -- specifically, "Rude Strangers in Places where Humans gather to Await Transportation".
- In the side story "Training Sequence", Ranma uses the concept of a Word to explain to Akane how significant objects and places embody themselves spiritually, and can draw upon the power of related concepts.
- When Ranma and Akane escape from Hell by entering The Starless Sea, there are several short reaction shots that are clearly cameos from other works, although not all are identifable. Those that are include:
- Slayers, the cast of whom are in a castle in the Scottish Highlands.
- Godzilla rousing in the depths of the Pacific.
- Gunsmith Cats, in its second appearance in the story.
- What might be Splinter from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
- The author's note at the end of chapter five lists Hellblazer, Ninja High School and Gold Digger as well, but it's not obvious who maps to what passage.
- To In Nomine, when the demon lord Delaniel is described as having a Word -- for those unfamiliar with the game, this is the thing he is the Demon of -- specifically, "Rude Strangers in Places where Humans gather to Await Transportation".
- Presumably these were all foreshadowing of future crossover elements intended to play larger parts in the overall story. Another might be Liang, the "okaasama" who runs "The Dream of Jade" brothel in Hong Kong, but there is so little detail it's impossible to be sure.
- The well at the base of the Cliff of Black Stone in chapter five is strongly hinted to be the Well of Urd from Norse Mythology.
- Ido and Hugo from Gunnm are members of the Nekomi Tech Motor Club.
