Sgt. Frog/Characters
Some or all of these characters need descriptions. A list of tropes is not a description. Please provide at least a few words telling how these characters differ from other characters with the same tropelists. |
Characters from Sgt. Frog include:
The Keroro Platoon
Sergeant Keroro
Voiced by: Kumiko Watanabe (Japanese) and Todd Haberkorn (English)
"Our hero", a rather hapless Alien Invader who spends more time doing chores and goofing off than he spends actually trying to invade. His plans usually take the form of Zany Schemes that blow up in his face in various amusing ways.
- Adorkable: In moments when he's genuinely excited about something, he expresses a child-like enthusiasm that is just too cute for words.
- Anti-Hero - the loser type, most of the time.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass - Rarely -- very rarely—shows signs of this. In Volume 17, he stops Zoruru dead with a single shadow-wreathed look and a stern order. Then he does the same thing to a Kiruru unit in Volume 20.
- He also kicks a lot of ass in the movies. Notable examples include: him being turned into a dragon in the fourth movie and proceeding to kick his entire platoon's dragon asses. Note that when he transformed, Keroro, like the rest of his platoon, forgot all about his mission and who he was and while the audience were privy to the other platoon-turned-dragon members thoughts, we do not hear Keroro's at all.
- In the third movie, Keroro engages his evil clone in a mecha duel to protect Fuyuki and holds on his own fairly well before he was downed. After reuniting with Fuyuki and finding Dark Keroro still alive, he angrily runs over and slaps the clone hard enough to send him flying.
- Explosive Overclocking - Occurs if he manages to get oversaturated with water, briefly unlocking the Keroro From Back Then before he's brutally Brought Down to Normal again.
- Improbable Weapon User - In many video games, he draws from his collection of toys and cleaning supplies to help him out—the vacuum is a particular favorite.
- Jerkass/Jerk with a Heart of Gold - Wavers back and forth.
- Man Child
- The Neidermeyer
- Trademark Favorite Food: The Funimation dub exaggerates his love of hamburgers (or "cow flesh")
- Verbal Tic - Frequently ends his sentences with "...de arimasu!"
- Villain Protagonist - Largely a Harmless Villain, of course.
- Weaksauce Weakness - Banana peels. He's compelled to step and slip on them.
- Otaku - Of the Gundam variety but also obsesses over the Admiral Geroro manga, space bikes, and trains, surprisingly enough.
- Idiot Hero - Whenever he and his platoon are charged with saving Pekopon from other alien threats and not being the "threat" themselves.
Private Tamama
Voiced by: Etsuko Kozakura (Japanese) and Brina Palencia (English)
The team's youngest member, made obvious by the fact he's still got tadpole features. Despite his cuteness, he's got a hair-trigger temper, a massive jealous streak, and likes firing his laser when provoked. Also, he loves his "Gunsou-san!"
- All Love Is Unrequited - Keroro seems blissfully ignorant about his feelings.
- Bare-Fisted Monk - His primary fighting style aside from Blowing Stuff Up.
- Breath Weapon - Tamama IMPACT--!
- Berserk Button
- Beware the Nice Ones - Heavily. Shoop-da-whoops anyone who dare ticks him off.
- Brutal Honesty - Uses this on Karara to dissuade her crush... though he doesn't realize that's what he's doing.
- Clingy Jealous Tadpole - He really doesn't like anyone else getting too close to his Gunsou-san.
- Deliberately Cute Child
- Don't You Dare Pity Me! - Goes through this with Mois a couple times.
- Eye Beams
- Fair Weather Mentor - Towards Taruru. Loves the way Taruru strokes his ego, hates his overwhelming cheerfulness and naivete.
- Fartillery
- Feet of Clay - Gradually grows disenchanted with Keroro due to this, especially in the manga.
- Green-Eyed Monster
- Kawaiiko - Deliberately plays up his cute image.
- Love Makes You Crazy/Evil
- Ping-Pong Naivete
- The Nicknamer - Calls Momoka "Momochi", Natsumi "Natchi" and Fuyuki, "Fucchi".
- Sweet Tooth
- Verbal Tic - "Desu!"
- Not quite to the extent that Suiseiseki takes it, but Tamama does say "desu" quite a bit.
- Yandere - Far worse than Momoka, as he tends to go straight for the hypotenuse-chopping option when he can.
Corporal Giroro
Voiced by: Joji Nakata (Japanese) and Christopher Sabat (English)
Keroro's Lancer. Suspects that he's the only one actually taking the invasion seriously anymore. Hopelessly crushing on Natsumi ever since she beat him up during their first fight.
- Berserk Button - Anything that threatens Natsumi.
- BFG - His Weapons of Choice.
- Blood Knight
- Butt Monkey - Mainly Kururu's.
- Cannot Spit It Out
- Charm Point - His belt.
- Clingy Jealous Frog - Has his moments. In the manga, became so intensely jealous of Koyuki after she first arrived that he attempted to Murder the Hypotenuse. Lampshaded by Tamama's gloating thoughts about finally understanding the Corporal.
- The Comically Serious
- Expressive Hat: The skull on his hat.
- Good Scars, Evil Scars - A massive one on his face.
- Gratuitous English - Sometimes his battle cries veer into this. Including, at one point: "This! Is! SPARTA!"
- Green-Eyed Monster - Gets this way over Natsumi from time to time.
- Hand Cannon - Another favored weapon.
- Hey, It's That Voice! - It's hard to see Giroro in the same light when you realize that Joji Nakata also voiced another red-clad character, who's a hell of a lot more violent and much more effective...
- High-Pressure Emotion - Again, commonly set off by Natsumi. In several instances, just sitting around brooding causes him to emit such an intense heat that the others notice and complain/comment on it.
- High-Pressure Blood - Early on in the manga, he also tended to bleed profusely when experiencing such intense emotions. Thankfully, that particular quirk seems to have fallen by the wayside.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold
- Love At First Punch
- Love Makes You Crazy - he doesn't seem to be careful about himself...
- Giroro Needs Natsumi
- More Dakka
- Murder the Hypotenuse - In the manga, he attempted this on Koyuki right after her introduction.
- Perpetual Frowner
- Pet the Dog - Or cat, in this case. Mostly focused around his pet cat and Natsumi. However, he has his moments with Fuyuki, Keroro, and the rest of the platoon.
- Primal Fear - Terrified of ghosts.
- Stay in the Kitchen - Part of his tsun-tsun act in the manga involves him making comments along these lines to Natsumi.
- Tsundere
- Tsurime Eyes - He does have noticeably pointy eyes...
- The Worf Effect
Sergeant Major Kururu
Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu (Japanese) and Chuck Huber (English)
The team's intelligence officer. Incredibly smug and self-satisfied, Kururu is constantly inventing all sorts of weird stuff, but few of these are actually meant to help the invasion... they're just for his own amusement. Loves giving Keroro just enough rope to hang himself, over and over and over again.
- Brilliant but Lazy
- Clarke's Third Law
- Creepy Monotone - Excitement makes his voice rise. This makes him even creepier.
- Evil Laugh - KU KU KU KU KUUU...!
- Four Eyes, Zero Soul
- Gratuitous English
- Handy Remote Control - Always seems to have one around.
- Hidden Heart of Gold - More obvious in the manga, where he has several moments showing that for all his Jerkassery, he really does care about the rest of his team.
- A notable moment of this in the anime is when he saves fellow Wave buddy Saburo (spending the month's entire invasion budget in the process) without hesitation.
- Ho Yay - Deliberately invokes this with Giroro in the anime. Whether he's doing this just to screw with his head or out of some incredibly warped actual affection...
- The Hyena
- Insufferable Genius
- It Amused Me/For the Evulz
- Jerkass
- Mad Scientist
- Nerd Glasses
- Odd Friendship - With 'Wavelength Buddy' Mutsumi. They aren't even shown interacting all that much, but they seem to be very buddy-buddy.
- Omnidisciplinary Scientist
- The Plan- Sometimes he dabbles in these.
- Pet the Dog - At times, actually shows signs of caring for others. One episode involved an actual puppy, complete with Natsumi and Fuyuki freaking out over what he might do to the poor thing.
- A good example of the anime Flanderizing his character is their removal of two of his key moments during the Garuru Platoon's introduction: encouraging Keroro to keep resisting after losing contact with the others and opening a trap door underneath Keroro to force him to escape while he attempts to hold off Garuru armed with only his headphones. By contrast, Anime!Kururu simply retreats into his Hacker Cave, letting Keroro think he's abandoned him.
- Scary Shiny Glasses - If you see him do this, it's already too late.
- The Scrappy - In-universe; The Keroro Platoon are huge celebrities on Keron, except for Dororo (who nobody seems to know about) and Kululu (who is actively despised)
- Signature Laugh - Kukuku...
- Spell My Name with an "S" - Kururu/Kululu. The English translation of the manga actually switched from Kururu to Kululu around Volume 10 or so, then switched back later on.
- Stalker with a Crush - Maybe towards Aki.
- Takehito Koyasu
- Token Evil Teammate - While they're technically all villains, he still fits.
- Transformation Ray - One of his favorite gadgets to build.
- Trickster Mentor - Certainly isn't above manipulating the others into self-improvement.
- Troll
- Witch Doctor
Lance Corporal Dororo, nee Zeroro
Voiced by: Takeshi Kusao (Japanese) and J Michael Tatum (English)
The team's token Ninja. Used to be a painfully shy, sickly child, and so clung rather desperately to his friendship with Keroro... something Keroro shamelessly exploited, leaving him traumatized to the point that any reminder of these abuses triggers his 'Trauma Switch' and sends him into the nearest corner. Grew up to become an assassin, then got separated from the others on Earth and found acceptance and peace with a group of ninjas, leading to him changing his name and outlook on life.
- Apologises a Lot
- Beware the Nice Ones - That cute little tadpole became an assassin. Then a ninja.
- Big Fancy House
- Blue with Shock - Trauma Switch, on!
- Break the Cutie - Played for Laughs
- The Chew Toy
- Corner of Woe
- Cute Shotaro Boy - As a child, is basically a super-chew toy with a deadly combination of Moe factors.
- Extreme Doormat - Keroro treated him horribly when they were little, and Zeroro still stuck by his side. He grew out of this in the manga; sadly, anime!Dororo still gets trampled over regularly.
- Failed a Spot Check - Often on the other end of this, with others forgetting about him or failing to note his presence.
- Flanderization - In the manga, still doesn't show up very often, seems to have largely gotten over his childhood issues (though he has his moments), and is typically calm and collected. In the anime...
- Heroic BSOD - Goes into these regularly. Shows up far less often in the manga.
- Ill Boy - As a child, was terribly sickly and always wore a surgical mask.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy - When Koyuki had her ninja skills/memories sealed away, he was willing to let her live a happy, normal life, even though she could no longer see him.
- Lonely Rich Kid
- Ping-Pong Naivete - In the anime, he often winds up asking "Keroro, are we really friends...?", yet never actually learns from his past experiences and is easily shocked back into his corner of woe by Keroro's latest transgression.
- Powered Armor - The H-to-H Assassin suit (which bears more than a passing resemblance to Zoruru's enhancements...)
- My Hero Zero
- My Kung Fu Is Stronger Than Yours - Dororo having trained as a ninja on Earth gives him a valuable edge against Keron-trained Assassins. Even his former superior Jirara is eventually beaten.
- New Powers as the Plot Demands - The manga doesn't spotlight him very often, so it's not unusual for him to abruptly show up and whip out a new Assassin Art or Ninja Art and bail the others out.
- No Mouth - Always shown wearing a ninja, assassin or medical mask.
- Shrinking Violet
- Shy Blue Skinned Boy
- The Quixote - At least in the anime, where Koyuki is about the only one who sympathizes with his idealism.
- Technical Pacifist
- Token Good Teammate
- Trauma Conga Line - The anime just loves playing this for laughs, especially during flashbacks to the frogs' childhood.
- The Unfavorite - Thanks to being too nice for his team, he isn't always popular with his "friends"... assuming they notice/remember him. Extends to his portrayal within Keron Force media (such as being seated behind a plant during a news conference).
- With Friends Like These...
The Hinatas
Fuyuki Hinata
Voiced by: Tomoko Kawakami (Japanese [Eps. 1-231]), Houko Kuwashima (Japanese [Ep. 232 onwards]) and Leah Clark (English)
A timid Nice Guy who loves the occult. Very introverted, but he's compassionate and polite, and very inquisitive about the world at its weirdest.
- A Boy And His Alien Frog Bent On World Domination
- Agent Mulder
- Beware the Nice Ones - When he snaps, all we get to see is his Battle Aura and shadowed eyes—never what he actually does.
- Whatever it is, it's apparently in-universe Nightmare Fuel—even Natsumi is absolutely terrified of pushing Fuyuki too far, and Keroro, normally somewhat made of iron, was reduced to a stammering, terrified mess at whatever he did to him the first time this happened...
- Chick Magnet: If it's female, and weird(Weird as in a schizo billion-heiress, an Emotionless Girl with a shape-shifting space entity on her head, and a mermaid) there's a huge chance they will have a thing for him.
- Cute Shotaro Boy
- Extreme Doormat - Until you push him too far.
- Friend to All Living Things - Whether they be human, alien, or monster.
- Idiot Hair
- Nice Guy: Just don't push his buttons too far...
- Non-Action Guy
- Oblivious to Love
- The Other Darrin - Houko Kuwashima stood in for Tomoko Kawakami throughout her sick leave since 2008. But Kawakami tragically died on June 9, 2011, thus Kuwashima is now promoted as his permanent seiyuu.
- Unwanted Harem - He may not have an extensive fanclub like Natsumi, but at least four girls have crush on him. Only half of said girls are human.
- Weirdness Magnet - More supernatural things have happened to him than any of the other cast. Unusually for this trope, he loves it this way. Natsumi, not so much...
- Morality Pet - Is usually the one who guilt trips the sergeant to reconsidering whenever he takes a plan for invasion too far
Natsumi Hinata
Voiced by: Chiwa Saitou (Japanese) and Cherami Leigh (English)
Fuyuki's tomboyish older sister, she considers herself—correctly—to be the first line of defense against Keroro's taking over the planet. Has a massive crush on Mutsumi, and is good friends with Koyuki.
- Action Girl - The platoon unilaterally considers her Earth's greatest warrior.
- All Love Is Unrequited - Hopelessly crushes on Mutsumi, while getting crushed on by Giroro, Koyuki, several of her female classmates...
- Anti-Hero - She's technically on the side of good by protecting the Earth, even if she's a violent, anti-social brute.
- Badass Normal
- Defrosting Ice Queen - she may still be suspicious of the Keronians in general, but she also seems to become a bit of a nicer character after they arrive—in addition to Giroro, she gets on pretty well with Koyuki.
- Even the Girls Want Her - Has a considerable all-female fanclub at school.
- Girlish Pigtails
- Improbable Weapon User
- Jerkass/Jerk with a Heart of Gold - Wavers between back and forth, although the former is her more common side.
- Knuckle-Cracking: When those knuckles start cracking, a beating is about to ensue on Keroro.
- Hidden Eyes - A sure sign of trouble brewing for Keroro.
- Powered Armor - Her Powered 723 suit.
- Not So Different - She can be just as arrogant, self-absorbed and overconfident as Keroro at times, which is probably why they get along well.
- Moreover, she can be as violent, domineering, and no-nonsense as Giroro, which probably is part of the reason he respects her so much.
- Red Baron - According to Fuyuki in the manga, her overprotective streak during elementary school earned her the nickname Devil Summer.
- Shorttank
- Sibling Yin-Yang
- Tomboy
- Trademark Favorite Food - Seems to be sweet-potatoes.
- Tsundere - A vicious Type A on par with the likes of Louise.
- Waif Fu
Aki Hinata
Voiced by: Akiko Hiramatsu (Japanese) and Jamie Marchi (English)
A famous manga editor and Hot Shounen Mom. Very self-confident and cheerful. She loves "Kero-chan" and his friends, but is usually away from home working.
- Action Mom - Doesn't have to be triggered by a threat to her family.
- Badass Normal
- Gag Boobs - In the manga.
- Girlish Pigtails - You know it's summertime when Aki wears her hair like this instead.
- Hair Antennae
- Hot Shounen Mom
- Mama Bear
- Meganekko - They're a rather tiny pair, but the trope still applies. It doesn't help that this and the above-mentioned Hair Antennae are usually the last two things one notices about Aki...
- Ms. Fanservice
- Sequential Artist
- Statuesque Stunner
Close Pekoponian Friends
Momoka Nishizawa
Voiced by: Haruna Ikezawa (Japanese) and Monica Rial (English)
Heir to a multi-billion-dollar international corporation, Momoka seems sweet and innocent at first, but has a hidden dark side related to her obsessive crush on Fuyuki. Spends tons of money on various Zany Schemes that she hopes will help her get closer to him, with little success.
- Action Girl: Given the proper motivation, yes.
- Berserk Button
- Cannot Spit It Out - Momoka suffers greatly from this.
- Character Development - In the manga, she has been steadily outgrowing her original Yandere tendencies, even developing a friendly rivalry with another girl.
- Lonely Rich Kid
- Important Haircut - A Flash Back in the manga shows that she gave herself one when her Split Personality emerged.
- New Transfer Student - As revealed in her How We Got Here Backstory in the manga, she used to attend a private school. Fuyuki was the first friend she made when she transferred to a public school.
- Powered Armor - Develops her own.
- Screw the Rules, I Have Money
- Shrinking Violet
- Spikes of Villainy - Her hair does this.
- Split Personality
- Spoiled Sweet - Her 'good' side.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl - "Sweet Momoka" is the girly-girl, while "Dark Momoka" is the tomboy.
- Waif Fu
- Yandere
Paul Moriyama
Voiced by: Keiji Fujiwara (Japanese) and Kent Williams (English)
Momoka's personal servant and Battle Butler. Always on hand to tend to her every need and slightest whim, no matter what it calls for. Also serves as a surrogate parent of sorts, as her parents are almost always off doing their own thing.
- Badass Grandpa - In the dub he reminisces about Stalingrad.
- Battle Butler
- Captain Ersatz, Shout-Out - to Ken Masters.
- Worthy Opponent - He and Giroro consider each other to be this, or at least they did in Paul's debut episode.
Mutsumi Hojo/Saburo
Voiced by: Akira Ishida (Japanese) and Joel McDonald (English)
An extremely laid-back, smooth poet and artist who has an Odd Friendship with Kururu and serves as Natsumi's Love Interest. Runs his own radio show, and carries a special pen that lets him bring his drawings to life.
- The Ace: In the few times he's seen in action, expect him to do it like a hardcore Badass.
- Badass Normal - Aside from his pen, doesn't have any special abilities or skills.
- Brilliant but Lazy - Prefers lying around on rooftops to, say, actually attending school.
- Covert Pervert - Strong undertones of this in the manga, bordering on Handsome Lech.
- Estrogen Brigade Bait
- Green Lantern Ring - His pen.
- Oblivious to Love - May or may not know about Natsumi's feelings for him.
- This doesn't necessarily prevent him from returning those feelings, though.
- Odd Friendship - With Kururu; descibed as being "Wavelength buddies".
- Out of Focus - Frequently sees less action than the other human characters.
- White-Haired Pretty Boy
Koyuki Azumaya
Voiced by: Ryo Hirohashi (Japanese) and Luci Christian (English)
A cute, cheerful Ninja girl who found Zeroro and brought him back to her Hidden Ninja Village, befriending him and eventually accompanying him to the city, where she transferred into Natsumi's school and helped him locate the others.
- Action Girl
- An Ice Person - Many of her special moves are ice-based.
- Badass Adorable - Very much so.
- Cat Smile
- Country Mouse - This is exaggerated in the English dub, but she's from a simple rural background in both versions.
- Hair Decorations - Her big red hair ribbon.
- Genki Girl
- Highly-Visible Ninja - She's good at keeping out of sight when she wants, it's just... she's not so good about hiding her skills in normal, everyday life.
- Ms. Fanservice - Combines this with Innocent Fanservice Girl
- New Transfer Student
- No Social Skills
- Romantic Two-Girl Friendship - With Natsumi. The manga takes this into full-blown Schoolgirl Lesbians territory, though still one-sided.
- Wide-Eyed Idealist
The Narrator
Voiced by: Keiji Fujiwara (Japanese) and R Bruce Elliott (English)
Exactly What It Says on the Tin.
- Lemony Narrator: Cranks it Up to Eleven! Moreso in the Funimation dub.
- The Men in Black: Appears dressed as a Kuroko with a big red N over his face.
Pekoponian-like Aliens
Angol Mois
Voiced by: Mamiko Noto (Japanese) and Carrie Savage (English)
The surprisingly cute Lord of Terror who was sent to destroy Earth as according to the prophecy of Nostradamus. Only she kind of missed her cue, and Keroro manages to convince her not to go through with it by virtue of being her beloved "Uncle". Sort of an honorary Sixth Ranger of the Keroro Platoon, though for obvious reasons she can't show off her moves all that often.
- Apocalypse Maiden
- Cosplay Otaku Girl - Seem to has fun dressing various cutesy costume.
- Dark-Skinned Blond - Her appearance deliberately invokes the 'kogal' trend; she based her human appearance off of a Deliquent girl she met once.
- Did We Just Have Tea with Cthulhu? - The volume 19 of manga elaborate this. The Angols are beings from higher plan of existence, and while you can subdue them with Angol Stone, nobody understand what they really are. Keroro is the very first person who befriend the Angol.
- Dojikko
- Holding Back the Phlebotinum - Justified by the destructive nature of her powers; one manga chapter revealed she was hiding the negative effects this was having on her.
- Love Martyr - Towards her 'Uncle'.
- Magical Girl
- Malaproper
- Really Seven Hundred Years Old
- Simple Staff - The "Lucifer Spear", with has the power to destroy the world.
- Spell My Name with an "S" - Angol Moa in the manga, Angol Mois in the anime.
- Team Pet - An interesting inversion on the usual formula; instead of five humans with a ridiculously cute talking animal helper from space, it's five animals with a ridiculously cute talking human(oid) helper from space.
- Valley Girl
- Verbal Tic - "teyuuka" ("Or perhaps I should say") before expressing an opinion.
- White-Haired Pretty Girl - Her true form.
Space Detective Kogoro
Voiced by: Nobuyuki Hiyama (Japanese) and John Swasey (English)
An old childhood friend of Keroro's, Kogoro is a Space Detective who always seems to be down on his luck. Despite this, he always seems cheerful, laughing and grinning no matter what he might be thinking.
- The Exotic Detective
- Hot-Blooded - Lives and breathes this.
- Large Ham - The largest one in the butcher shop.
- Shout-Out - He's a parody of Kenji Ooba, the star of a Toku series called Space Sheriff Gavan.
- Sibling Yin-Yang
- Stepford Smiler - He keeps on laughing, even when he's upset or angry.
Rabbie
Voiced by: Tomoko Kaneda (Japanese) and Leah Clark (English)
Kogoro's younger sister, and the only one who can tell how he really feels at any given moment. As a result, she frequently has to act as a "translator" of sorts. Does her best to support her brother by taking various part-time jobs.
- Apologises a Lot - Usually for her brother.
- Petting Zoo People - Has cute bunny ears.
- Shrinking Violet
- Sibling Yin-Yang
- Spell My Name with an "S" - Rabbie/Lavie
Alisa Southerncross
Voiced by: Akiko Yajima (Japanese)
An Emotionless Girl adopted by the Shapeshifting alien Nebula, who rides around as her cat-eared headband and fights for her. He takes out her opponents and eats aliens, all while searching for a way to help her become human. Alisa, for her part, seems entirely uninterested in this... but shows some interest in Fuyuki.
- Action Girl
- Little Miss Snarker
- Emotionless Girl
- Heroic BSOD - She has this when Nebula was eaten by Chupacabra-like alien, even lost her sense of self-reservation.
- Girlish Pigtails
- Magical Girlfriend - Though not an official girlfriend, the undeniable elements of this have led to... tension from Momoka/Fuyuki shippers.
- Pinocchio Syndrome - Interestingly, Nebula seems more interested in obtaining this for Alisa than Alisa is herself.
- Shapeshifter Weapon - Nebula.
- What Is This Thing You Call Love?
- When She Smiles - Played it, Alisa has natural smile the first time she met Fuyuki. We only see Slasher Smile afterward.
- The Worf Effect - Not to the same extreme as Giroro just yet, but all the same: when she gets knocked back, that's a problem.
The Garuru Platoon
First Lieutenant Garuru
Voiced by: Akio Ohtsuka (Japanese)
Giroro's Aloof Big Brother, a famous sniper and hero of Keron Force. Was given his own platoon, and was assigned to confront and replace the Keroro Platoon. Cue the Wham Episodes.
- The Ace
- Aloof Big Brother
- Big Brother Mentor - This is more obvious in the manga, where he's introduced long before the Wham Episodes, and is clearly shown before and afterwards to be very fond of his baby brother, despite Giroro's seething jealousy.
- The Chessmaster - May have been subtly manipulating the entire battle to make the Keroro Platoon look good. More obvious in the manga, where he explicitly spares Kururu's life and sends him to take on Tororo, which turns the tide of battle.
- Cold Sniper - More in the anime than in the manga; thank you, Flanderization.
- The Comically Serious
- Friendly Sniper - In the manga, is far nicer, friendlier, and enjoys gently teasing his brother, but is still a well-respected commander.
- Heavy Metal - His music of choice.
- Red Baron, Shout-Out - Nightmare of Keromon
- Stealth Mentor
- Weaksauce Weakness - One chapter reveals he can't use chopsticks. Unless spearing his food with them counts.
- Worthy Opponent
Private First Class Taruru
Voiced by: Akeno Watanabe (Japanese)
A cute, if insanely energetic, tadpole who absolutely adores his "Master Tamama"... And, rather obviously, was tapped to be part of the Garuru Platoon, where he cheerfully played Evil Counterpart to Tamama. Often puckers his lips up in a sort of "kissy face" expression.
- Broken Pedestal - Goes through this with Tamama.
- Cheerful Child
- Dissonant Serenity - After his first fight with Tamama, when he took out Paul and Momoka in short order.
- Eye Beams
- Keet
- Plot-Relevant Age-Up - Apparently hit Keronian puberty before Tamama, losing his tadpole looks. In the anime, this happens shortly after an episode involving him and Karara running around with Transformation Rays, including one that controls aging. Hmm...
- Punch Clock Villain - Doesn't really think of following his orders as evil; when Tamama shows up for a rematch, is genuiely shocked by the idea that "I'm the villain in this story?!"
- Unlucky Childhood Friend - The anime has him appearing alongside Karara a few times before his Plot-Relevant Age-Up. So far, Karara has yet to turn her flings of affection towards him.
- Verbal Tic - "-ssu", a derivative of desu. Sound familiar, dood?
Lance Corporal Zoruru
Voiced by: Kazuki Yao (Japanese)
A half-cybernectic assassin who appears to have joined the Garuru Platoon just to get a crack at Zeroro. Would probably love to be a Knight of Cerebus, if given the chance. Unfortunately, he tends to be even more forgotten than Dororo...
- Artificial Limbs - A full half of his body, bisceted down the middle, has been replaced with robotics.
- Berserk Button - Being ignored.
- Black Eyes of Crazy
- Cyber Cyclops
- Determinator
- Evil Counterpart - Towards Dororo, whom he insists on calling 'Zeroro'.
- Failed a Spot Check - Like Dororo, ends up on the other end of this several times. One chapter plays with this, as he sits in on a meeting with the Keroro Platoon, taking Dororo's usual spot so that the reader's eye may glide right over him without seeing anything amiss... despite having just seen Dororo leaving with Koyuki. That's before the others take it Up to Eleven.
- Freudian Excuse - Volume 17 of the manga revealed he apparently attended the same school as Keroro and Zeroro, and was completely ignored when those two first met... despite standing directly behind Zeroro at the time.
- Hollywood Cyborg
- Knight of Cerebus - During the Garuru Platoon's invasion, he defeats and seemingly kills several of the Keroro Platoon's allies in rather nightmarish fashion, only to have this Subverted by an Anticlimax. Attempted again in Volume 17; whether that ended in an Anticlimax is up for debate.
- Not So Different
- Red Eyes, Take Warning - One eye, red pupil, black sclera. Judging from the Flash Back in Volume 17, these are his natural eyes.
- Unknown Rival
- Verbal Tic - Dramatic stammering, as in "Z... Zeroro..."
Recruit Tororo
Voiced by: Kappei Yamaguchi (Japanese)
An incredibly irritating tadpole who hacked into Keron Forces' computer once, got caught and was promptly recruited. Considers himself Kururu's rival, and longs for the chance to put him through the ultimate Humiliation Conga.
- Big Eater
- Bratty Half-Pint
- For the Evulz/It Amused Me
- Insufferable Genius
- Mad Scientist
- Nerd Glasses
- Not So Harmless - In Volume 19, hacked into one of Keroro's robots and used it to brainwash him.
- Oh Crap - When Kururu reveals that practically all of his programs are just inferior versions of Kururu's older projects, then immediately turns the tables on him.
- Playful Hacker
- Recruiting the Criminal - Didn't sign up voluntarily, but was drafted after Keron Force caught him poking around their systems.
- Smug Snake
- Unknown Rival - Considers himself Kururu's rival; Kururu doesn't even remember him... And when he does, it doesn't end well for Tororo.
Ko-Kero
A Sixth Ranger of sorts for the Garuru Platoon's debut, with very different origins in the manga and anime. The manga version is a Creepy Child clone intended to "replace" Keroro, while the anime is a deaged, Brainwashed and Crazy Keroro.
- Brainwashed and Crazy - Anime only
- Bratty Half-Pint
- Creepy Child
- Dissonant Serenity
- Lack of Empathy
- Put on a Bus - Manga only; the clone's ultimate fate is never detailed.
Chief Medic Pururu
Voiced by: Satsuki Yukino (Japanese)
A childhood friend of Keroro, Giroro and Zeroro. Originally a civilian medic, she got bored and joined the military, ending up assigned to the Garuru Platoon.
- Affirmative Action Girl - Both in the Garuru Platoon and in the younger Keroro's circle of friends; she wasn't mentioned or shown in any flashbacks until her debut episode.
- Afraid of Needles - Her Weapon of Choice invokes this.
- Combat Medic
- Corner of Woe - triggered when someone calls her obasan (auntie/old lady) or makes any sort of reference to her age.
- Hospital Hottie - Triggers the usual "Hello, Nurse!!" reaction from Keroro.
- Girl with Psycho Weapon
- Improbable Weapon User - Syringes. Big ones.
- Older Than She Looks - About Christmas Cake level... in Keronian years.
- Small Girl Big Syringe
- Uh-Oh Eyes - Sometimes gets a creepy look in her eyes... usually while she's still smiling. Especially in the manga...
- Yandere—Pururu has... interesting ways of showing her affection. Particularly in the manga, where she openly encourages Natsumi to torture Keroro more, smiling brightly the entire time.
- Pururu is a nurse, the more abused Keroro gets, the more he needs her medical attention.
The Shurara Corps
Shurara
Voiced by: Norio Wakamoto (Japanese)
The leader of a group of anime-only villains who are out to steal the Keron Star from Keroro. Notably, all of the members were based on fan-submitted characters, meaning they all ascended to anime canon. The whole arc turned into a giant Monster of the Week-fest.

- Keet
- Mad Artist

Voiced by: Cho
Putata's partner in crime and a master puppeteer who conceals himself via invisibility while fighting with his puppet.
- Marionette Master
- People Puppets - Another of his talents.
- Perverse Puppet
- Shout-Out - Basically he's one big reference to Kankurou.
Giruru
Voiced by: Kunihiko Yasui (Japanese)
A mutant Keronian made of pure blue slime. Can transform others into mutants like him, but is weak to anything that can make him solidify.
- Blob Monster - The more intelligent sort.
- Body Horror - Can turn others into living puddles of flesh.
- Making a Splash - Giruru's attack style. You'd be amazed how good of a fighter a viscus blob of fluid is.
- Names to Know in Anime - Kunihiko Yasui
- Sibling Yin-Yang - With his younger brother, Dokuku.
- Weaksauce Weakness - Powder. Any kind of powder.
Dokuku
Voiced by: Takeshi Kusao (Japanese)
A ghostly Keronian with a heavily scarred face, a scythe blade replacing his left hand, and a demonic symbol.
- Our Ghosts Are Different
- Red Right Hand - His scythe-arm.
- Talking to Himself - Shares his seiyuu with Dororo.
- The Unintelligible - He can only speak by saying his name, much like a Pokemon. However, his brother seems to understand him just fine.
Kagege
Voiced by: Toshio Furukawa (Japanese)
The assassin of the Shurara Corps, an older tadpole who can manipulate shadows.
- Living Shadow - Kagege has the power to bring people's shadows to life and make them attack their owners.
- Power Glows - And so does Kagege. Constantly.
- Scarf of Asskicking
Seamstress Nuii
Voiced by: Kurumi Mamiya (Japanese)
Once an abandoned Keronian doll, Nuii was brought to life by Shurara and made into one of his agents. She had the ability to turn everyone into plush dolls like herself, and under Gyororo's supervision, inflitrated the Hinata household in the guise of Natsumi's old teddy bear.
- Ambiguous Gender - There is heated debate as to whether Nuii is male or female, funny as it sounds.
- Anti-Villain
- Heel Face Turn - Almost results in Redemption Equals Death.
- Living Toys
- Puppet Permutation
Gyororo
Voiced by: Hiromi Hirata (Japanese)
Nuii's superior, a Keronian covered in Extra Eyes who can blend into his surroundings, making him a perfect spy.

- Invisibility
- Kick the Dog
- Jerkass

A robotic Keronian with scanner eyes, magnetic hands, built-in jets and the ability to fuse others with nearby mechanical objects.

- Killer Robot

Voiced by: Eiji Maruyama (Japanese)
A snowman Keronian who can summon massive gusts of arctic winds and freeze everything around him. However, he's weak against any sort of heat.
- An Ice Person
- Blow You Away
- Minion with an F In Evil - Forcing people to play fun New Years games is not exactly evil.
- Snowlems
Other Keronians
Keroro-papa
Voiced by: Kenichi Ogata (Japanese) and Greg Dulcie (English)
Keroro's famous and terrifying father. The mere mention of his name sets off all kinds of Parental Issues for his terrified son. However, in person, he seems to be rather laidback...
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass - Well... quite possibly, anyway.
- Retired Badass
- Like Father, Like Son - This is more evident in the dub, where Keroro's dad is a proud war criminal.
- Unnamed Parent
- "Well Done, Son" Guy - Just the mention of his name turns Keroro into this.
Keroro-mama
Voiced by: Sachiko Chijimitsu (Japanese)
Keroro's mother who first appeared in the KeroZero short shown before the 4th Movie. She's very loving toward her son like a good mother, but she also seems to have a tricky side to her.
- Amazingly Embarrassing Parent - She just loves to go around and talk about how wonderful her son is while offering sweets. She does this to everyone, much to Keroro's chagrin.
- Body Snatcher - Although Natsumi was the one who had the idea of switching bodies with her, with the consent of both, afterwards she just disappeared with Natsumi's body, going to sight see Pekopon and even on a date with Giroro (Even though he knew it was Keroro's mother) while Natsumi in her body got dragged to another city by Keroro's father, who didn't believe any switch had happened.
- Doting Parent
- Generation Xerox - Her son definitely got her looks.
- Mrs. Robinson - She actually went into this on Giroro.
- Shout-Out - Her design is very reminiscent of the mother in Atashinchi, who was voiced by Kumiko Watanabe, Keroro's voice actor.
Giroro-papa
Giroro and Garuru's father. Appears to have a reputation just as terrifying as Keroro's father, though he's not mentioned as often. Makes a habit of turning even the simplest tasks into 'tests' for his sons.
- Big Ol' Eyebrows
- Drill Sergeant Nasty - He fits this Trope rather nicely in the Chibi-Kero Short.
- Unnamed Parent
- Retired Badass
Dororo-mama
Dororo's mother. Looks exactly like her son (in a dress), and apparently passed down a lot of her personality traits, too. Whenever she sees Keroro, Giroro or Pururu, she immediately thanks them for being friends with Zeroro. Repeatedly. Over and over and over...
- Apologises a Lot
- Beware the Nice Ones - Guess where Dororo got his ass-kicking genes from.
- Big Fancy House
- Doting Parent
- Generation Xerox
- Ill Girl - Wears a surgical mask like Zeroro.
- Shrinking Violet
- Shy Blue Skinned Girl
- Talking To Herself - she had Kumiko Watanabe's voice. And surprisingly not Ax Crazy Yangire like in Victory Gundam
- Unnamed Parent
Karara
Voiced by: Junko Noda (Japanese)and Alison Viktorin (English)
An extremely cute Keronian tadpole, Karara is an extremely naive daydreamer who dreams of finding her Knight in Shining Armor and falls in love at the drop of a hat with anyone who helps her out. Avoids Stalker with a Crush mainly because she runs off and does her "Bridal Training" offscreen, then shows up childishly expecting to have her affections returned...only to transfer her crush to someone else and start the whole process over again.
- Ascended Extra - Appeared briefly in the manga; became a recurring character in the anime.
- Cheerful Child
- Genki Girl
- Kansai Regional Accent
- Love Freak
- The Ojou - Her father's incredibly rich.
- Manic Pixie Dream Girl - She could be this, if she ever stayed focused on a single love interest for more than an episode or two.
- McNinja - The result of her crush on Dororo: she and her sister show up as hyperactive kunoichis. Hilarity Ensues.
- Playing Against Type - Junko Noda doesn't usually voice Genki Girls often.
- Running Gag - Almost always falls for somebody else every time she shows up.
- Wide-Eyed Idealist
Chiroro
Voiced by: Natsuko Kuwatani (Japanese)
Karara's fraternal twin sister. Doesn't appear as much or get as much character focus as her sibling.
- Cheerful Child
- Demoted to Extra - Taruru replaced her as Karara's constant companion in early episodes; she only got to debut after his Plot-Relevant Age-Up, and is still very much in her twin sister's shadow.
- Genki Girl
- The Ojou - Same as her sister, though this generally isn't invoked as much for her.
Joriri
Voiced by: Junichi Sugawara (Japanese)
An anime-exclusive character based on a fan submition, Joriri is an unshaven bum who appears in various flashbacks, giving the young Keroro, Giroro, Zeroro and Pururu questionable advice and generally being a poor role model. May have been introduced to add an "adult!Keroro" style character to the past, even though the younger Keroro already filled that role. Recently showed up in the present, much to the dismay of fandom.
- Ascended Fanon - Joriri was originally one of the fan designs submitted to the Keroro Land mangazine, before being incorporated into the tv show.
- Ice Cream Koan - His big gimmick involves imparting an extremely odd form of sage wisdom that doesn't make a lot of sense.
- Perma-Stubble - Not an action hero, though.
- Sixth Ranger - He joins the Keroro platoon in the 6th season... for one episode. Although that event is still referenced later.
Assassin Captain Jirara
Voiced by: Kouji Yada (Japanese)
Leader of the X1 assassin troop on Keron, and Zeroro's trainer in the art of killing. Cold and merciless and wanted in several galaxies, it only makes sense that he popped up on Pekopon...
- Artificial Limbs - It almost seems like this is a requirement for spooky assassin-types.
- Drill Sergeant Nasty/Sadist Teacher - Jirara trains his underlings by making them constantly fight each other nearly to the death. If you die, you were a bad student anyways.
- However, a Flash Back in Volume 17 of the manga reveals that he deliberately chose a Lighter and Softer alternative to making Zeroro a full-fledged assassin, despite acknowledging that Zeroro had excelled in his training. When his pupil begged for an explanation, Jirara tells him flat-out that the assassin's path is "darker than you can even imagine".
- Giant Spider - He takes on this form in Dororo's nightmare.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning
Warrant-Officer Bariri
Another character solely from the anime. Despite his rank and the respect he apparently has, he's very... Crazy. Most of this is put in the direction of his unhealthy infatuation with Pururu. Really, really unhealthy.
- Bunny Ears Lawyer
- Large Ham
- Love Makes You Crazy - And oh how it does. It's even more than just a Trope name. He's literally shown going to a psychiatrist about his insane love for Pururu.
- Stalker with a Crush
Other Aliens
Sumomo
Voiced by: Juri Ihata (Japanese) and Caitlin Glass (English)
A pink Keronian-like alien, known as an Axolotl. She's a highly popular and very spoiled Idol Singer who likes to pull Ratings Stunts.
- Ascended Extra - Starred in a one-shot side story in the manga; became a recurring character in the anime.
- Idol Singer
- It's All About Me - Doesn't really care if others are hurt by her antics.
- Ratings Stunt - Like, say... Pretending to be Natsumi via Ridiculously Human Robot and wreaking her life for kicks, then getting confused when Natsumi gets pissed.
- Spoiled Brat
- Voluntary Shapeshifting - Can transform into a human-like form at will.
Vipers
Voiced by: Nobuo Tobita (Japanese) and Chris Patton (English)
An alien race of humanoid snakemen, the Vipers are natural enemies of Keronians and are dangerous, deadly predators. Most of the Vipers that show up in the anime have a personal vendetta against the Keroro Platoon, thanks to what happened to the first Viper that targeted them. In the manga, on the other hand...
- Arch Enemy
- Enemy Mine
- Ignored Enemy
- Only ONE Face (and Voice)
- Shout-Out - to Space Adventure Cobra; notice that they don't look like real vipers because they have cobra hoods.
- Species Surname
- The Worf Effect - In the manga, one shows up during Alisa's introduction just so she can eat him.
Movie-Exclusive Characters
Kiruru
A sort of ancient Keronian super weapon that feeds off of negative emotions to gain strength and destroy planets. While not necessarily movie exclusive, they're a very big element of the first and third movies, and become a victim of the Worf Effect in the second. In the first movie, Keroro and Fuyuki accidentally unleash one on Tokyo.
- Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever
- Emotion Eater
- Person of Mass Destruction
- Sealed Evil in a Can
- The Tokyo Fireball - Kiruru's doing.
Mirara
An ancient Keronian weapons specialist that sealed away the first Kiruru, but got stuck in the proverbial can with him as well. She works off of positive emotions, and is able to turn into a key, the only thing that can reseal the Kiruru and save the world.
- Emergency Transformation - Granted, she couldn't do it until the characters actually got along again.
- Exposition Fairy - To Keroro and Fuyuki.
- Stop Helping Me! - Pointing out the fact that Keroro made a doomsday device in front of the Hinatas at a time like this isn't really helping your cause, Mirara.
Meru
A Maronian living at the bottom of the ocean who was feeling lonely one day and as a result, abducted Natsumi to be his princess. In the end, all he wanted was a mother figure rather than a princess.
- Bratty Half-Pint
- Jerkass - To Maru
- Parental Abandonment - His main issue.
Maru
The only other friend Meru has, despite the fact he treats her like his servant and is generally unpleasant to her. Regardless, she remains chipper and incredibly loyal to him.
Dark Keroro
The primary antagonist of the third movie. Cloned from a sample of Keroro's own DNA, taken off the Kero Ball when it was lost in an ancient Keronian facility hidden in the ancient city of Macchu Picchu in Peru.
- Evil Twin to Keroro
- Large Ham: "TWO MINUTES is all I need to conquer this mud ball!"
- What Is This Thing You Call Friendship
Shivava
- Arrogant Kung Fu Guy
- Evil Counterpart to Tamama
- Homage: to Sun Wukong of the Journey To The West tale that Dragon Ball was based on. Note his 'symbol', which is really a band around him that resembles the flying cloud, while resembling Wukong's Restraining Bolt. He even uses the original 'Great Saint That Surpasses Heaven' title when he first appears.
- He's also a pretty direct reference to Goku from Dragon Ball. He uses a blue blast of energy at one point charged up similarly to the Kamehameha and, in the final battle, attempts to use the Genki Dama while fighting against Tamama and Momoka, even calling up for other people's power. One of the scenes featuring him in the credits sequence is a homage to Dragonball's original ending and another one shows him in a place very similar to the Tenkaichi Budokai tournament from Dragonball, fighting against someone with the body obscured, but wearing pants and shoes identical to Yamcha's in the 22nd and 23rd Budokais.
- Weapon of Choice: A Simple Staff WITH LASERS.
Doruru
- Blood Knight
- Evil Counterpart to Giroro
- More Dakka: Doruru has Arm Cannons, rocket launchers on his back and four miniguns IN HIS HAT. And his own Dendrobium Orchis much like Giroro's.
Miruru
Appearing at the same time as Dark Keroro, she's the only one capable of operating their Ominous Floating Castle, but there's something about her that even he doesn't know...
- Expy of Mirara from the first movie.
- Power Gives You Wings: As her alterego Nazca.
Shion
One of Momoka's old friends, and shares a lot in common with her - except that her rich parents passed away early on. All she wanted was a real family, and from the depths of Mont-Saint-Michel, someone answered...
- The Ojou
- Kid With the Remote Control: the ancient book that only Shion can read summons the Earth Dragon in the first place.
Terara
When Shion attempts to breed the Earth Dragon egg hidden under Mont-Saint-Michel, the plan reaches frution and the massive Earth Dragon is hatched - but the destruction it causes to the world forces Shion to intervene, and eventually the Earth Dragon relinquishes its power, turning into a harmless little creature that resembles a salamander-based Keronian.
- Super-Powered Evil Side: The Earth Dragon form, though it's officially sealed away by the end.
- Meaningful Name: Terara comes from 'terra', meaning Earth. Can also be read as referring to terror...
- Nice Hat: Shion's beret is passed to Terara at the end.
Pierre
Shion's legal guardian, very similar to Paul in more ways than one can imagine.
- Battle Butler
- Captain Ersatz: Like Paul channeling Ken Masters, Pierre turns into E Honda.
- Homage: In line with the Turn a Gundam references in the 4th movie, Pierre has a White Doll moustache.
- Back to Sgt. Frog
