Assorted Main Series Villains
Wart
"I am the great and powerful Wart! Ha HA!" |
The first real villain Mario fought after Bowser (and little more than a blip on the radar since then), Wart is a big, nasty frog-like creature who took over the dreamworld of Subcon with an army of Shy Guys and monsters spawned from his Nightmare Machine. The fairy-like Subcon people contacted Mario and friends through their dreams, and soon Wart was undone thanks to his allergy to turnips and onions.
Tropes associated with Wart:
- Adipose Rex
- Badass Long Robe
- Big Bad: Of Super Mario Bros. 2.
- Big No: Lets out an epic one upon his defeat in Super Mario Advance.
- The Cameo: In The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (under his Japanese name, Mamu). The book Dinosaur Dilemma also mentions he's among the guests invited to a gathering being held by Bowser.
- Evil Laugh
- Evil Overlord: Though his cameo in Link's Awakening shows he's mellowed out a lot.
- Evil vs. Evil: He and Bowser get into a fight at the end of the Tanooki Suits Me comic. It's off-panel, though.
- Force Feeding: How he's beaten, specifically by throwing vegetables into his mouth when he goes to spit bubbles.
- Frogs and Toads: One or the other. It's hard to tell.
- Fourth Wall Portrait: His Link's Awakening artwork.
- Heel Face Turn: He helps Link in Link's Awakening, and in the Choose Your Own Adventure story Doors to Doom, he's mellowed out and helps the Mario Bros.
- In his spin-off appearances and cameos, he borders on Friendly Enemy territory.
- I Don't Like the Sound of That Place: The book Dinosaur Dilemma mentions he's the king of "The Land of Nightmares".
- Kaizo Trap: He can still hurt the player character in his death throes. This is fixed in Super Mario Advance.
- Make My Monster Grow: One of his bubbles changes Clawgrip from a regular Sidestepper into a Giant Enemy Crab, and a pair of... eyes... into Fryguy.
- Some unused sprites imply that Mouser and Tryclyde were going to get this treatment as well.
- Making a Splash: He attacks with the aforementioned bubbles.
- Noodle Incident: The comic story Cloud Nine has Mario give us this line:
"Adding it all up, it's perfectly clear--Wart snatched the king... again!" |
- Off-Model: In his comic debut, he looked like a Kremling. His second appearance was more accurate... yet still kind of off looking.
- Requisite Royal Regalia: Crown, bracelets, a robe, and a medallion.
- Suddenly Voiced: Along with the other bosses, Wart was given a voice in the Super Mario Advance remake of Super Mario Bros. 2.
- Tactical Suicide Boss: You kinda have to wonder why, if his only weakness is vegetables, Wart keeps a machine that constantly spits out veggies in his throne room.
- The machine produced nightmares, and it may have turned against him or malfunctioned, and started producing his worst nightmare - vegetables.
- Tears of Blood: Disturbingly enough, in some versions of the game, it looks like he's bleeding from the eyes after he's been beaten.
- Totally Radical: He's reimagined as a skater punk in the book Doors to Doom.
- Skate or CROAK!
- Verbal Tic: In Link's Awakening, he had a habit of saying of "ribbit" a lot. In an apparent Continuity Nod, he also says it a lot in Super Mario Advance.
- Villains Out Shopping: Literally in the comic story Tanooki Suits Me, where he shows up to buy some artwork Bowser had stolen, and when Mario and Luigi run into him in Doors to Doom, he's busy playing a Game Boy.
- Weaksauce Weakness: Vegetables.
- Not that much of a Weaksauce Weakness since the same vegetables he's weak to can be used as effective throwing weapons, though.
The 8-Bits
Mouser: "Here, have some bombs!" |
Wart's followers in Super Mario Bros.. 2. The rank and file are simple Shy Guys and Shy Guy variants (like Snifits and Beezos), but they're led by Wart's five generals: Mouser, Tryclyde, Fryguy, Clawgrip, and Robirdo. Like Wart, the leaders have never appeared in another game since, although they did reappear as minions for Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and the Valiant comics (save for Robirdo, who wasn't added to the group until Super Mario Advance). The Shy Guys, on the other hand, continue to pop up as common enemies in the Mushroom Kingdom.
Tropes associated with the quartet include:
- Ascended Extra: Mouser in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, where he was the second most recurring villain and Bowser's main lackey.
- A Kind of One: Spin-offs reveal Mouser, Fryguy and Clawgrip are all just individual members of a species.
- Asteroids Monster: Fryguy.
- Breath Weapon: Tryclyde and Fryguy breathe fire, while Robirdo can fire giant eggs.
- The Brute / Dumb Muscle: Tryclyde in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
- Computer Voice: Robirdo.
- Cool Shades: Mouser sports these.
- Demoted to Extra: Mouser and Tryclyde in Nintendo Comics System, Clawgrip in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
- Dishing Out Dirt: Clawgrip attacks by throwing boulders.
- Domino Mask: Worn by Fryguy.
- The Dragon: Mouser was King Koopa's in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
- Evil Albino: The white Mouser from Doki Doki Panic.
- Evil Feels Good: The comics state Mouser was originally neutral, but was brought to The Dark Side by Bowser and grew to love it.
- Giant Enemy Crab: Clawgrip.
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Mouser, Clawgrip and Robirdo need to be attacked with their own weapons.
- Killer Robot: Robirdo
- King Mook: According to the comics, Mouser used to lead a whole kingdom of identical mice who live in the Mushroom Kingdom's sewers.
- Mad Bomber: Mouser.
- Make My Monster Grow: Super Mario Advance reveals Clawgrip was originally a normal Sidestepper, made big by Wart's bubbles. Some unused sprites imply Mouser and Tryclyde would have been the same.
- Mechanical Lifeform: Robirdo.
- Misplaced Wildlife: Fryguy, a fire monster, is fought in a Slippy-Slidey Ice World.
- Multiple Head Case: Tryclyde in Nintendo Comics System.
- Pirate: Clawgrip has a stereotypical pirate accent, and "played" one in all three of his appearances in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
- The Quiet One: Tryclyde in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
- Recurring Boss: Mouser and Tryclyde.
- Rodents of Unusual Size: Mouser.
- Sinister Shades: Mouser's trademark.
- Shockwave Stomp: Created by Robirdo's jumps.
- Suddenly Voiced: Like Wart they all engage in Trash Talk in the GBA remake. They also have speaking roles in the DiC cartoon however.
- This Cannot Be!: Most give this type of response upon being defeated in Super Mario Advance.
- Trash Talk: All of them do this right before battle in Super Mario Advance.
- Unexplained Accent: For whatever reason, Mouser has a German accent in the cartoon.
Birdo
"Oh I'm never gonna let ya go. You're just too...CUTE!" |
A pink dinosaur that Mario fought several times. In Super Mario Bros. 2, Birdo has the power to spit projectile eggs out of his... her... errr... its mouth. S/he's never seen without his/her distinctive pink hair ribbon. The SMB 2 player's manual notes that Birdo is biologically male but views itself as female (though later games--and localizations--tend to go back-and-forth on his/her gender stats). Nowadays Birdo occasionally shows up in the Mario Kart and Mario sports games, where s/he's usually paired off with fellow dinosaur Yoshi. The credits of SMB 2 mistakenly switched his/her name with another baddie, Ostro the ostrich. In Japan, s/he's called Catherine.
Tropes associated with Birdo:
- Abhorrent Admirer: The reaction of most characters to her affections, especially Popple in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Angelo in Fortune Street.
- Ambiguous Gender
- Breath Weapon: Sorta; s/he spits eggs while her/his red and green variations can breathe fire.
- Crossdresser or Transgender: Depending on who you ask.
- A Day in the Limelight: In addition to having a story arc in Captain Rainbow, she is one of the main protagonists of Wario's Woods.
- Dual Boss: With Popple in Superstar Saga.
- Everything's Better with Rainbows: Her sports appearances often involve them such as Mario Golf.
- Genki Girl
- Giant Space Flea From Nowhere: Her appearance in Super Mario RPG was pretty random, only recieving a teensy bit of foreshadowing (a random Nimbus Person mentions Valentina keeps a giant egg around for some reason).
- Heel Face Revolving Door: Depending on what game she appears in, she's either fighting Mario, joining the fun alongside him in sports, parties, and kart racing, or in the case of Superstar Sage, she's both an ally at first and an enemy later (Though that could have been a different Birdo).
- Hoist by His Own Petard: In Super Mario Bros. 2, you attack her with her own spat eggs.
- I Have Many Names: Birdo, Ostro, Birdetta, Catherine, Shelly...
- A Kind of One
- Life Drain: She possesses this ability in Superstar Saga, sucking up one of the Mario Bros. with her snout and stealing some of their HP.
- Love Freak: Whenever Popple is involved, anyway.
- Made of Explodium: Some of her eggs in Super Mario RPG and Superstar Saga.
- Mini Boss: Her usual role, though she has proper Boss status in Superstar Saga.
- Official Couple: Maybe with Yoshi, at least in the side-games.
- Outlaw Couple: Sees herself and Popple as this in Superstar Saga.
- Purple Eyes
- Say It with Hearts
- She's a Man In Japan
- Turns Red: In Superstar Saga, if Popple is defeated before her.
- The Unintelligible: While she speaks in a few games, most of the time she just honks.
- Weapons That Suck: Her snout can be used to suck things up in Superstar Saga and the Mario baseball games.
- You Shall Not Pass: "This is as far as you go!"
Tatanga
Debut: Super Mario Land |
Tatanga the Mysterious Space Man is a little purple alien who flies around in his own personal battleship, the Pagosu. He first appeared in Super Mario Land, in which he kidnapped Princess Daisy of Sarasaland with an army of baddies. He was defeated by Mario, but he made one more appearance, this time guarding one of Wario's six golden coins. When Mario returned to the Mushroom Kingdom, he found it overtaken by Wario and was forced to take on Tatanga yet again. The spaceman hasn't been seen since.
Tropes associated with Tatanga include:
- Alien Invader
- Big Ol' Eyebrows: In the comics.
- Cool Ship
- Cute Little Fangs
- Demoted to Dragon
- The Dragon: Possibly Wario's in 6 Golden Coins.
- A Pionpi is one to Tatanga in Nintendo Comics System.
- Dragon Their Feet: While every other 6 Golden Coins boss appears in Nintendo Power's Mario vs. Wario comic, he's conspicuously absent.
- Expy: He was a bit Bowser-esque in the Valiant Comics.
- High Altitude Battle: The final battle in Super Mario Land.
- Hypnotic Eyes: Its All There in the Manual.
- Little Purple Men
- The Magnificent: Tatanga the Conqueror and Tatanga the Mysterious Spaceman.
- The Man Behind the Man: Fanon says he was working for Wario all along, but there's nothing officially confirming this.
- The Napoleon
- Third Person Person: In the comics, occasionally.
- Took a Level in Badass: His comic counterpart was about as tall as Daisy, muscular, had a nifty black suit, more pronounced fangs, and claw-like fingers.
- Welcome to The Real World: He intended to conquer it in the Game Boy comics.

Cackletta
"I shall dispose of you quickly, and then eat you for lunch!" |
A wicked witch who has long bedeviled the Beanbean Kingdom, Cackletta learned that only one with a beautiful voice could use the wish-granting artifact known as the Beanstar... so she and her eccentric henchman, Fawful, turned to the neighboring Mushroom Kingdom to steal the voice of its monarch, Princess Peach. Big mistake--the Mario Brothers were on the case in a heartbeat.
Tropes associated with Cackletta:
- Big Bad: Of Superstar Saga
- Demonic Possession: Cackletta's body dies about halfway through the game, but her spirit possesses Bowser, creating the mind-scarring... thing... that is Bowletta.
- Evil Laugh
- Master of Illusion: Cackletta can create duplicates of herself to confuse attackers.
- Our Ghosts Are Different: The final enemy Mario and Luigi face in Superstar Saga is Cackletta's ghost, possessing Bowser.
- Playing with Fire: She can throw magical fireballs.
- Punny Name: In both English and Japanese; in the latter her name is "Geragemōna", "geragera" being an onomatopoeia for laughter.
- Shock and Awe: Her main attack is firing magical lightning bolts.
- Take Over the World: Or at least two kingdoms. She was probably planning on expanding, eventually.
- Wicked Witch
Fawful
"I have fury!!!" |
A crazed inventor who constantly spouts strange similes and garbled English, he first appeared as Cackletta's right-hand man, aiding her in her schemes. He was seemingly killed near the end of Superstar Saga, but in fact survived, laying low in the sewers of Peach's Castle, running a badge shop while plotting his return to glory. He carried out these plans in Bowser's Inside Story, returning as the main antagonist, causing the Blorb outbreak and taking control of both Bowser's and Peach's castles, as well as unearthing an ancient evil in order to use its power for his own ends. Of course, in taking Bowser's Castle he angered the Koopa King; a mistake that ultimately led to his downfall.
Tropes associated with Fawful:
- Beware the Silly Ones: He may be completely fucking nuts, but that doesn't mean he can't be dangerous.
- Big Bad: in Bowser's Inside Story.
- Catch Phrase: The above quote. In Bowser's Inside Story, he instead favors the variation "I have chortles!".
- Cloudcuckoolander: A rare, villainous example.
- Demoted to Extra: In Partners in Time, his role is reduced to being a shopkeeper. He does foreshadow his role as a Big Bad in Bowser's Inside Story though.
- The Dragon: To Cackletta in Superstar Saga.
- Dragon Ascendant: He is the Big Bad of Bowser's Inside Story.
- Evil Genius
- Evil Tastes Good:
Princess Peach's sweet voice will soon be the bread that makes the sandwich of Cackletta's desires! And this battle shall be the delicious mustard on that bread! The mustard of your doom! |
- Genius Ditz
- Giggling Villain: "I HAVE CHORTLES!"
- Intentional Engrish for Funny
- Laughably Evil: Oh so much.
- Mad Libs Catchphrase: Most apparent in Bowser's Inside Story.
- Mad Scientist
- Slasher Smile/Cheshire Cat Grin
- The Starscream: Near the end of Superstar Saga, he voices his feelings of defiance towards Cackletta and decides to attack the Mario Bros. only of his own accord. He's defeated before he can pursue the issue any further, though.
- Taking You with Me: Tries to do this at the end of Bowser's Inside Story.
- Talks Like a Simile
- Verbal Tic: In the Japanese version, Gerakobits punctuated his sentences with "~Fururururu!". This was changed drastically in the localization.
- The French localization does keep that tic in the form of an Evil Laugh that goes "Fuyuyuyuyuyuyu !".
The Shroobs
A militant race of mushroom-like aliens who abandoned their dead, barren planet in favor of greener pastures, laying their eyes on the Mushroom Kingdom of the past. When they attacked Peach's Castle while the adult Princess Peach happened to be visiting in E. Gadd's time machine, they took her prisoner, driving the Mario Bros. to travel back in time and team up with their younger selves in order to defeat the invaders.
Tropes associated with the Shroobs:
- Alien Invasion
- Aliens Are Bastards
- Aliens Speaking English: Averted, except in the case of Elder Princess Shroob, who can speak normally (but in ALL CAPS).
- Exclusively Evil
- Badass Moustache: Shroobsworth.
- Bad Boss: Elder Princess Shroob has no problem shooting or knocking down her minion's UFOs.
- Badass Grandpa: Shroobsworths are incredibly old looking, but are still able to kick your ass as they're among the most powerful enemies in the game.
- Bonus Boss: Three generic Shroobs in Bowser's Inside Story
- Combat Tentacles: Used by Elder Princess Shroob's final form.
- Cyborg: RC Shroobers.

- Dying Race: Their planet was apparently on its last leg.
- Everything's Better with Spinning: They and their sub-species have a habit of doing this.

- Flying Saucer
- The Goomba: Shrooblets, who look like Shroobified versions of their namesake.

- Mecha-Mooks: Shroids.
- One-Winged Angel: Elder Princess Shroob in the final battle assumes a more monstrous form after her initial defeat.
- Ray Gun: Their main weapon.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning
- Sealed Evil in a Can: Elder Princess Shroob being sealed in the Cobalt Star, and Bowser having dozens of Shroobs on ice in Bowser's Inside Story.
- Technopath: RC Shroobers.
- Tripod Terror: Princess Shroob's throne.
- Underground Monkey: Various "Shroobified" enemies such as Shroob Rexes and Tashroobas.

- What Happened to the Mouse?: The fate of the Junior Shrooboid that Professor E. Gadd had captured.
Dark Star
"Soon this kingdom will vanish along with all who dwell within. And you, too, will sleep eternally in the dark power's embrace!" |
A being of pure evil that terrorized the Mushroom Kingdom in the distant past, but was eventually sealed away. Fawful unearthed it and attempted to drain its power, but it proved too powerful for him to handle...
Tropes associated with the Dark Star:
- Beam-O-War: Against Bowser before the Final Battle.
- Diabolus Ex Nihilo
- Eldritch Abomination
- Empathic Environment: Like the Shadow Queen, it causes it to become Always Night.
- Evil Is Not a Toy: It consumes Fawful to regain its stolen power and become Dark Bowser, though he seems to live on as the 'core' of the creature.
- Frickin' Laser Beams: It uses dark laser attacks as both its original form and the core of Dark Bowser.
- Made of Evil: All forms. Apparently, a form of evil which can clone people's DNA.
- Mirror Boss: After absorbing Bowser's DNA, it becomes a dark copy of him.
- Omnicidal Maniac: It wants to destroy Mushroom World, if not the entire universe.
- Sealed Evil in a Can: It was sealed under Toad Town by the Star Sprites, but Fawful opened the can.
- Taking You with Me: When Mario & Luigi deplete its HP in the Airway battle, you have to button mash to escape its kamikaze vacuum attack until it croaks.
Midbus
"Now it is time! Now we will fight! Then you will lose! And you will cry!" |
With Fawful's ascension to primary villain, it's only natural that he'd get a lackey of his very own. This porcine brute may be a rather dim bulb, but his strength rivals even that of the King of Koopas himself. He antagonizes Bowser throughout the game on his master's orders, until he is at last defeated for good in the final stages.
- An Ice Person: Blizzard Midbus.
- Big Eater
- The Brute
- Cloudcuckoolander: "Sense is for the weak."
- The Dragon
- Dumb Muscle
- Epic Flail: A wrecking ball.
- Evil Laugh: Muh Muh Muh!
- Evil Counterpart: Eviler counterpart, perhaps, but he shares numerous characteristics with Bowser.
- Flunky Boss: He can send out Snawfuls once he becomes Blizzard Midbus.
- Full Boar Action
- Gluttonous Pig
- Hopeless Boss Fight: The battle against him in Cavi Cape.
- Mix-and-Match Critters: Like some kind of boar armadillo.
- No Cure for Evil: Aversion; in the cage match, he can heal himself by eating food tossed by audience members, if Bowser doesn't get to it first.
- Large Ham: Quite literally, too.
- No Indoor Voice: It's not hard to imagine that everything he says is shouted.
- One-Winged Angel: Blizzard Midbus.
- Power Incontinence: After Blizzard Midbus is defeated, he loses control of his powers, and becomes frozen in a block of ice.
- Punny Name: Mid Boss.
- Recurring Boss
- Shockwave Stomp
- Spikes of Villainy
