Merlin

Caption

Merlin is a powerful wizard and the deuteragonist. Merlin is the wizard master and friend of 12-year-old orphan Arthur, a.k.a. Wart. Merlin is also the magical rival of Madam Mim and has a pet owl named Archimedes.

Archimedes: I did nothing of the sort! I intended to eat him! Young perch is my favorite dish, you know that!

  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: A grouchy, snarky owl. But he do have several small moments where he shows that he cares for Wart and Merlin, such as when he saves Wart from the pike, gives advice to Merlin during the wizard's duel with Mim and congrats Wart when he becomes Kay's squire, and stay at his side when an infuriated Merlin blows himself to the 20th centuries Bermuda.

Madame Mim

  • Affably Evil: Is cheerful, amiable, and actually pretty friendly when Arthur blunders into her house, and while he can tell she's unpleasant, he doesn't even realize she's dangerous until she tells him she has to kill him which she says with about as much fanfare as someone saying it's suddenly started raining.

Madame Mim: I suppose Merlin sees some good in you.

Madame Mim: Yes, and in my book, that's bad!

Sir Ector

Caption

Sir Ector is a supporting character in the film. He is a knight who is the father to Kay and adopted father to Arthur/Wart.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Anti-Villain: He acts antagonistic to Wart but he's closer to "strict father" then "antagonist".
  • Butt Monkey: Gets a Humiliation Conga in the kitchen scene.
  • Muggle Foster Parents: To Arthur/Wart.
  • Parental Favoritism: Ector's partiality to Kay is somewhat justified by the fact that Arthur/Wart is only his foster child. While he could probably stand to be nicer to Arthur, he's not really mean either... more just strict and demanding, which seems to be his personality in general. Kay may be the favorite, but Wart at least isn't The Unfavourite.
    • Ector does take Arthur's side over Kay's at least once. At the start of the film, he's actually berating Kay for letting Arthur go off into the woods by himself.
      • Society also played a role in this. To be a knight in that period, you must be of noble birth. Kay is, Arthur isn't, so of course Kay gets all the combat training and respect. Playing second fiddle to him as a squire is literally the best Arthur could hope for by law.
  • Pet the Dog: During his first scene, he scolds Kay for letting Arthur go alone in the forest and expresses his worries for the boy.

Sir Kay

  • Jerkass
  • Jerk Jock: Albeit the medieval version (meaning swordplay and jousting instead of football).
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Is implied to have at least a few gold flecks once in a while. At the end when his father demands he bow to Arthur, Kay does so sullenly at first... then after actually looking at him, does so sincerely.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: In response to Merlin causing a blizzard to appear in the castle, all Kay has to say is an annoyed "So what?".

Girl squirrel

Caption

A cute red female squirrel that runs into the Squirrel!Arthur, and falls in love with him. Is left heartbroken when she see Wart turning back to human.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Action Girl: Saves Squirrel-Arthur from the wolf by biting it's hint leg and lure it to run off a cliff.
  • Love Hurts: One of the most heartbreaking examples. She really loved Arthur and immediately starts sobbing in confusion and grief when he reveals himself to be human.
  • May-December Romance: Subverted, fortunately or unfortunately. Human biology is different from other mammals. As far as humans go, Arthur is just a boy barely into puberty, but in squirrel form, thats well into adulthood. The female squirrel is already a grown woman, but Arthur can't return her feelings not just because he isn't really a squirrel, but because he's still a boy. He wont be ready for anything like that for years. We have no way of knowing if the girl was grief-stricken not just because she understood that her crush was human, but also because he was basically still a child and couldn't return her feelings if he wanted to.
  • O.O.C Is A Serious Business: Until Wart turns human again, she spends her entire scene cheerful and in love. Even her slight confusion and hostility to the wolf can be played for laughs. If one looked carefully when she hears Wart's voice after he turns human, her warm smile is quickly replaced with a wide-eyed startle. She's at first shocked and confused, and then she runs into a tree and starts crying her broken heart out, with Wart briefly seeing her looking with tears in her eyes.
  • Stalker with a Crush
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Squirrel-Arthur, although it's a pretty one-sided romance.
