* How discredited is this trope? Was it always popular to stick a blind person with a deformed person and have the former immediately like/love the latter? Why did the movies/books/etc. keep doing this?
** Well, I'm not sure it's truly discredited. It's almost like a form of [[Disability Superpower]], where being blind is the superpower to befriend someone who is shunned despite being a nice person. It is pretty popular and pretty old, going back at least to Frankenstein, and I guess it's popular because it gives a way for a writer to have believable interaction between a 'hideous' character and an ordinary person.
