Despite {{spoiler|a fairly violent and traumatic past}} Leliana is the resident idealist in a story that is on the whole [[Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism|pretty]] [[Darker and Edgier|cynical]], and it's usually difficult to write a character like that without succumbing to the temptation to either [[Naive Newcomer|condescend to]], [[What an Idiot!|belittle]], or [[Break the Cutie|fundamentally alter]] the character's worldview. The writers avoided those traps, however, and managed to create a multi-layered personality who fits in well and demonstrates how idealism is possible even in a very dark world. {{spoiler|She's even quite nice to Loghain, who hates her on sight.}}
