Line 7:
After Ronan was destroyed, Peter Quill learns the true identity of his father.

The Guardians have become mercenaries since the events of the last movie. After doing a job for a race of [[Scary Dogmatic Aliens]] known as Sovereign, Rocket steals from them the very items they were supposed to protect even after they were paid, putting the Guardians at the top of their kill-list. They are saved by Peter's father, Ego, a alien who is actually a living planet with shape-shifting abilities, and invites Peter and his friends to a visit. Rocket, Groot, and Nebula, who was given to the Guardians by the Sovereign race as "payment", stay behind.
Like the first film, it was a hit at the box office. A sequel entitled ''[[Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3]]'' was released in 2023.

Meanwhile, Yondu's kidnapping of Peter finally caught up to him, and his Ravagers' faction is banished from the larger group because of it. Ayesha, the Sovereign's leader, hires Yondu's crew to hunt the Guardians for the batteries, but Yondu shows reluctance to go after Star-Lord, thanks to Peter being his adoptive son, after capturing Rocket and Groot. This leads to a mutiny. Nebula takes the opportunity to escape and storms off after Gamora to kill her.
