* Churchill's Secret Agents: The New Recruits is a reality miniseries where several ordinary and quite likable contestants are put through a simulation of the old SOE training course. The course not only includes rigorous training but inevitably an uneasy though mild resemblance to the infamous Milgram experiments. After five episodes you get at least the illusion that the contestants could have been real state-sponsored-thugs if properly motivated. The situation is more amenable to "reality" than many reality shows as even though they obviously have cameramen following the real SOE would have had training observers following them. When you compare them with some of the real stories while watching them change, you do get the feeling that, yes, Humans Are Warriors.
**The show gets kudos for a lot of special effects successes including period garb, cutting them off from the outside world and feeding them with period news pieces, and presenting the show in the Scottish Highlands where real training often took place. Professionals are also recruited to teach some of the skills including a retired catburglar turned security adviser.
**The contestants include interesting people. One is an idealistic doctor who Does Not Like Guns but learns to use one reasonably well and gives the impression that if she had been sent to France, likely she would have died horribly but equally likely she would have taken someone with her. It also includes a pretty, petite, softspoken, polite and intelligent English Rose that any guy in his right mind would want for a date, who claims bluntly that yes, she could kill someone. And proceeds to prove it. As well as a grandmother afraid of water crossing some of the coldest waters in Scotland. And a Pole whose Aunt really had been in the Polish Resistance-and executed by the Germans-who came to honor her family heritage.
* Doctor Who:The Sontarans are genetically engineered super soldiers, supposedly the finest in the galaxy (and about 4' 10") with highly advanced technology. Once UNIT get around the technology that was jamming their guns (since it affected the bullets, they changed bullets), their speed, mobility and high rates of fire let them to go through the Sontarans like a hot knife through melting butter. Given their tendency to be a Redshirt Army, it was... cathartic.
** Dalek Sec, upon merging with a human, outright states that humanity 'has such a wonderful mind for war', and that they are the great survivors of the universe (since human's establish a series of interplanetary empires and are one of three species that still live at the end of the universe, he had a point).
