* Aristocracy tends to be an intertwined clique of dynasties of military brats; usually supported in the past with sharecropper estates. Long periods of peace tends to complicate this, as do deliberate attempts by a monarch to tame aristocracy which may end up reducing a lot of them to the status of spoiled but less dangerous drones(as with the France of Louis IV) or impractical philosophers maintaining an ever more refined study of theoretical martial skill(as in Tokagawa Japan). Then too aristocracy may get into other areas of state service and middle class may receive ennoblement. With all those qualifications acknowledged it still happens that the basis of aristocracy tends to be family based military service.
