In 1979, Nickelodeon debuted as the first cable TV network to program exclusively for children. Early in its history, it was nicknamed the "Green Network" because of its educational programing. The original logo was a silver ball with "Nickelodeon" in rainbow letters in front of it. Its current"splat" logo, until September 2009, appeared in any of a myriad of shapes, but was always orange with white letters. The current one is now the word "Nickelodeon" in lowercase orange letters, designed in a way evoking the original logo. Its morning preschool educational block, Nick Jr., includes Blue's Clues and Dora the Explorer. During its evening block, Nick at Nite, the channel shows old Sit Comss and dramatic series.

One of Nickelodeon's earliest series, Pinwheel, featured animation from the United Kingdom and continental Europe (such as Chapi Chapo). From the late 1980s well into the 1990s, Nickelodeon's daytime schedule included reruns of half-hour cartoons, such as Inspector Gadget, Underdog and Yogi Bear, along with some original cartoons like Rugrats and Rocko's Modern Life, as well as game shows in which young contestants were, more often than not, Covered in Gunge (likely influenced by You Can't Do That on Television, Nickelodeon's first big hit series). It was renowned during the 90's due to the quality of its original series and gained world-wide prominence among international markets.

Now a Viacom property, Nickelodeon produces its Animated Shows in-house. Many of them, such as The Fairly Odd ParentsOddParents, are almost indistinguishable from shows on Time Warner's Cartoon Network. Recently has started making Made For TV Movies in the wake of Disney's surprise success with High School Musical -- The Last Day Of Summer (a Groundhog Day clone) sank without trace, while Gym Teacher: The Movie has gotten mixed reviews. They've made several successful treks into theaters under Paramount as well, with their string of Rugrats movies, and the SpongeBob movie. They recently acquired all the rights to anything related to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Winx Club. They also acquired the entire Power Rangers franchise, and started premiering their latest series on Nickelodeon, and will also start airing Power Rangers on Nicktoons.

Several other specialized cable channels have spun off from it, including TV Land, <s>Noggin/The N</s> Nick Jr., Teen Nick, <s>Nick GAS (Games And Sports)</s>, and <s>Nicktoons TV</s> <s>Nicktoons Network.</s> Nicktoons.
