The boys are the only one still smiling (at least Phineas) because they're the ones from ''our'' universe/timeline. In this alternative timeline, somehow the boys (In the second dimension) were killed in their schemes along with Vanessa. Which lead Dr. Doofenshmirtz's [[Start of Darkness]] into more of a menacing villain and an [[Evil Overlord]]. While Candace, Isabella, Buford, Baljeet, and the rest their friends became part of an underground resistance into stopping Doofenshmirtz.
** The offical website seems this confirm this somewhat. In this timeline, only one bad childhood event happened to doof. Sadly, it was enough to turn him into an evil dictator. We just don't know what said event is.
