* Most of the Exorcists in ''[[D.Gray-man]]'' are like this. Since Akuma look completely normal until they fill you full of [[More Dakka|bullets]] that [[Body Horror|dissolve you into a cloud of toxic dust]], it's kind of understandable that they're a little on edge.

* Subverted in ''[[Higurashi no Naku Koro ni]]''. {{spoiler|If it seems like people are trying to kill you, it's usually [[Hate Plague|hallucinations]]. Regardless, becoming like this will only make things worse.}}

* The world of ''[[Pokémon]]'' may be okay with [[Free-Range Children|letting kids run around unsupervised]], but, in ''[[Pokémon Special]]'', Sir Berlitz hired a pair of bodyguards to accompany his [[The Ojou|daughter]] on her journey to Mt. Coronet. Good thing too, as she becomes the target of kidnapping and winds up in the battle against Team Galactic. Too bad due to a mishap she got a pair of aspiring comedians instead.

* In ''[[Bleach]]'', Toshiro Hitsugaya is wondering if Aizen's death was forged and thinks that there's a traitor among them. {{spoiler|Look who was the villain for six years.}}

*** Which leads to still more justified paranoia as, after killing a spy, most people will continue to fire several shots in his general direction, just to be sure they got him. Doubly so if the spy went down just a little too easily. (Dead Ringer makes it appear the spy was killed when he takes his first damage, so if you seemingly kill a spy with one shot... you didn't.)

** Also in a level of irony, a spy is pretty paranoid at all times on whether the other team knows he is a spy or not.

** Starting at Fort Frolic, the [[Properly Paranoid]] player will develop a habit of shooting any frozen splicers, statues, or suspicious corpses he comes across. Because you never know when one of them might spring to life and assassinate you.

* ''[[Runescape]]'' has a whole quest series where an ex-zookeeper, Larry, was fired for claiming penguins are trying to take over the world. After the first quest in the series, you can see him squirming in a straitjacket outside the zoo where he once worked.
