Pyaasa ("Thirsty") is an extremely famous 1957 film produced by, directed by, and starring Guru Dutt. The Other Wiki states that
Vijay, an unpublished poet, is thought to be a failure by his family. His girlfriend from college married a wealthy publisher for security. Despairing of life, he encounters a Hooker with a Heart of Gold and Second Love Gulabo who appreciates his poetry. On the way, he tries to stop a homeless man from dying from suicide and gets injured in the process. The dead homeless man is mistaken to be Vijay and his poetry gets published. He becomes famous (what the audience consider posthumously).
He is surprised to find that his brothers (for the money) and the crowd finds him dead. He disproves them, despairs of humanity and leave with Gulabo.
