The report of his invovlment was pretty much just confirmation by the point it was made. ** When the image of the Cosmic Spider-Man costumes leaked between the initial anouncement & the 2099 reveal, most people immediately figured out that one of the two unanounced Spider-Men was Spider-Man 2099.
