This film employs many of the same tropes as its UK counterpart, ''[[Threads]]'', which was produced in response to ''[[The Day After]]''.
Given the political situation at the time, the film was sometimes seen as advancing the goals of the Soviet Union by discouraging use of nuclear deterrence and specifically the deployment of Pershing missiles in Europe. The film indirectly inspired ''[[Amerika]]'', which depicted the aftereffects of a Soviet takeover of the United States.
Not to be confused with ''[[The Day After Tomorrow]]''.
