This belief does appear to be promoted by the adult industry itself with the result that a significant number of claims don't hold up to scrutiny.

Quark's was essentially a holo-brothel, although the Federation characters were just a bit too squeaky clean to ever use it for that (that we saw). You might wonder how anyone would ever get anything done in the 24th Century with the ability to create fully functional, three-dimensional interactive characters that have no free will whatsoever.

It came from technology that allowed for prostitutes/escorts to be programmed into personalized sex puppets.
