* The default [[Mutants and Masterminds]] setting for the first and second edition was [[Freedom City]]. For the third edition, the default setting is still in the same universe as Freedom City, modules and the like are by default based on the west coast based Emerald City. While superpowered individuals are common in Freedom City, they were rare in Emerald City until an event caused an outbreak of superpowered individuals. This allows the player characters to be the founding members of their own team.
** The default team even manages to contain several [[Captain Ethnic]]s for the west coast including The Rook (A man who got rich in the dotcom bubble and got out at the right time. Being a [[Rich Idiot With No Day Job]], he becomes a Batman analog superhero because he has nothing better to do with his time), Princess (Valley Girl college student), Dragoneye (Mystic champion of the local Chinatown) and Kid Robot (A silicon valley computer system that became sapient).
