These things about Yuri!!! on Ice are subjective - not everyone will agree with all of them.

  • Hype Backlash: It gained a lot of attention despite gay romance being far from being a taboo on japanese animation, and sport anime fans don't consider it an exceptional sports anime either. It then proceeded to gain a lot of awards directed to western viewers like the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, generating massive backlash of the fandoms all the shows it was running against and had hope their favorite anime would win (Erased, My Hero Academia, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Re:Zero, Mob Psycho 100). As mentioned on Wikipedia, part of that can be explained by the fact it departs from most yaoi tropes. That just generated further backlash of readers and watchers from the actual genre. To make matters worse, it was also given an award for animation, which isn't said to be that exceptional either.
    • That being said, there was a lot of shipping going on, and, in an act of particular fujoshi aggression, accusations of homophobia flew pretty carelessly towards people who really don't care about or don't see same-sex relationships as appealing because of their sexual orientation. It's probably the last part that really ignited the backlash, as most men aren't aggresive towards fujoshi and don't give a damn about shipping, yet all of a sudden they were being attacked for what was essentially fanon (the show gets very close to, but is never truly explicit in it's depiction of relationships).
