David Martinez is a lowlower-class teenager living in Night City along his mom, thatwho works as paramedic. She struggles to pay the bills, and in school David is mistreated by some of histhe other students because the school that he attends, Arasaka Academy, is majorlymostly attended by students of higher classes thanks to the large amount ofits moneyexpensive demandedtuition. One day while returning from school after David causeshas caused an incident in the schoolthere by using pirated software, Davidhe and his mom are victimthe victims of a car accident caused by criminals.
 
David's mom is left into a coma and then dies, but not before David receives a beating offrom a school bully thatwho taunts him about his mother being possibly a prostitute. David also finds a cybernetic implant called the Sandevistan when he is given back his things offrom the wreckage back;of the accident; this is an item that the criminals tried to obtain but thatwhich was mistaken for being his property. Initially he tries to sell it, but after his mom dies, he seeks the help of a back-alley cyber-criminal called "the Doctor" to implant the thing on Davidin himself.
