But there is a way to make a group of people diverse without giving them specialized roles in a form of a group that would probably best be specialized for questing. One way is through personality, in this case based off of wacky ancient pseudoscience.

The four temperaments (also called the "four humors") was a theory that behavior was caused by concentrations of body fluids -- thefluids—the "humours" of Classical medicine: namely blood, yellow bile, black bile, and phlegm. Each of these would affect a person's personality differently, and the way these fluids were thought to affect behavior eventually became a part of personality theory, eventually separated completely from the idea that fluids actually controlled behavior. However, the names still remain. An ensemble based on these four humors can make the ensemble diverse without actually changing the roles of the characters in the show's continuity.

The four temperaments (humors) are:
Line 58:
* The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Plus manga by Akira Himekawa takes a literal spin with this trope by dividing Link into four different entities with personality traits that reflect the color tunic each is wearing: Green is melancholic, Red is sanguine, Blue is choleric and Purple is phlegmatic.
** The flash animations by Hadouken Dude took this to absolutely hilarious levels, with Green Link as the melancholic (experienced/exasperated/anal-retentive) one, Blue Link being the phlegmatic (calmer/rational/lazy) one, Red Link as the choleric (severe testosterone imbalance/lack of foresight) one, and Purple Link being the sanguine (along for the ride/accused of being gay because of personality and color) type.
* Yes! Pretty Cure 5 tries to throw us off by having four temperaments among five characters--bothcharacters—both Nozomi and Urara are sanguine. Rin is choleric, Komachi is melancholic, and Karen is phlegmatic (though not lazy by any stretch).
** In Fresh Pretty Cure: Love is sanguine, Miki is choleric, Inori is more likely supine, and Setsuna is a mix of melancholic and phlegmatic.
** Heartcatch Pretty Cure: Tsubomi is supine, Erika is sanguine, Itsuki is phlegmatic (but like Karen, not lazy by any stretch), and Yuri is melancholic.
Line 65:
* Keroro Gunsou follows the 5-humor style: Giroro is choleric, Dororo is melancholic, Kururu is phlegmatic, Tamama is sanguine, and Keroro is supine.
* Ranma ½: Despite not always acting as a group, Ranma is sanguine, Akane is choleric, Ryoga is melancholic and Genma is phlegmatic.
* Soul Eater: Maka is choleric, Soul is phlegmatic (Type I), Death the Kid is melancholic, Tsubaki and Liz are supine ,, Black☆Star and Patti are sanguine.
* Gurren Lagann: (Early episodes) Simon is melancholic, Kamina is sanguine, Yoko is choleric and Leeron is phlegmatic.
* Azumanga Daioh: Chiyo-chan is sanguine, Tomo is also sanguine (showing how two people with the same temperament can be very different), Sakaki is either melancholic or supine, Yomi is choleric, and Osaka is phlegmatic.
Line 80:
** The Minerva pilots in Gundam Seed Destiny possess two temparents: Shinn is both Sanguine and Melancholic, Athrun is Choleric and Melancholic, Ray is both Melancholic and Phlegmatic and Lunamaria is Sanguine and Supine.
* The titular band in Beck fits this even better than the Five-Man Band pattern: hot-blooded Chiba (Sanguine), charismatic and ambitious Ryuusuke (Choleric), calm and collected Taira (Melancholic) and everyman Koyuki (Supine). Only Saku's Phlegmatic nature is perhaps not so immediately obvious, but he keeps constantly worrying about his skills holding the band back, even though he's a really good drummer.
* In the original Weiss Kreuz, Ken is sanguine, Youji is phlegmatic, Aya is choleric, and Omi is melancholic. Between the choleric personality and being the focus character, casual fans often mistake Aya for being the team leader--itleader—it's actually Omi.
* The four ARMS teenagers in Project ARMS. Ryo is Phlegmatic, Hayato is Choleric, Takeshi is Sanguine, and Kei is Melancholic.
* The Slayers characters fit perfectly into these categories, with the Choleric Lina, Phlegmatic Gourry, Sanguine Amelia, and Melancholic Zelgadis. Any of their secondary allies, Sylphiel in particular, also fit into the Supine teperament without utilizing a type II Phlegmatic.
Line 242:
* La Grande Bouffe: Marcello is sanguine, Ugo is choleric, Philippe is melancholic and Michel is phlegmatic.
* The Untouchables: Eliot Ness is Choleric, Jimmy Malone is Melancholic, George Stone is Sanguine and Oscar Wallace is Phlegmatic.
* The various James Bondss:
** Sanguine: Roger Moore's Bond.
** Choleric: Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan's Bonds.
Line 343:
* The Talies on Lost: Libby (Sanguine), Ana Lucia (Choleric), Mr. Eko (Melancholic) and Bernard (Phlegmatic).
** In Season Three, the four most prominent Others are: Tom/Mr. Friendly (Sanguine), Juliet (Choleric), Richard (Melancholic) and Ben (Phlegmatic).
** And Season Four gives no less then three Four Temperament Ensembles:
*** Jack's Faction: Jack (Phlegmatic), Juliet (Choleric), Kate (Melancholic) and Sun (Sanguine).
*** Locke's Faction: Locke (Choleric), Sawyer (Melancholic), Hurley (Sanguine) and Ben (Phlegmatic).
Line 419:
* Metallica: James Hetfield is choleric, Lars Ulrich is sanguine, and Kirk Hammett is phlegmatic. The bass players occupy less certain territory, but it could be argued that Cliff Burton was a melancholic, Jason Newsted a phlegmatic and Robert Trujillo somewhere between a phlegmatic and a sanguine.
* Gorillaz: Murdoc is choleric, 2D is Sanguine, Noodle is Melancholic and Russel is phlegmatic.
* For Disturbed, vocalist David Draiman is Phlegmatic (tends to sit in a dark, lonely corner and write lyrics), guitarist Dan Donegan is Melancholic (main song-writer, generally a meticulous professional) while drummer Mike Wengren and bassist John Moyer tend to sit between Choleric and Sanguine
* Behemoth - Nergal is Choleric, Inferno is Melancholic, Orion is Plegmatic, and Seth is Sanguine.
* Queen: Freddie Mercury was Choleric, Brian May is Phlegmatic, Roger Taylor is Sanguine, and John Deacon is Melancholic.
Line 448:
** Vorinclex is Sanguine.
** Urabrask is Supine.
* While FATAL does have a humors system, there is no rule forcing your party to be a Four-Temperament Ensemble. Indeed, this would actively contradict the obsessive randomisation inherent to the FATAL system.
* In Warhammer Fantasy Battle and Warhammer 40000, appropriately enough, the four gods of Chaos each represent an emotion and mindset. Khorne (the god of anger and bloodshed) is choleric, Slaanesh (god of passion and lust) is sanguine, Tzeentch (god of ambition and hope) is (ironically) melancholic, and Nurgle (god of despair and disease) is (appropriately) phlegmatic.
