Gasaraki was produced by Sunrise, directed by Ryosuke Takahashi of Armored Trooper VOTOMS fame and originally aired in 1998. ADV Films released a translated version. It is a bit notable for more recent anime fans as the first big "series-wide" directoral job a certain Goro Taniguchi had - he was "assistant director" for the entire show and helped to make it (somewhat) comprehensible. His work here would lead to him being allowed to fully write, direct and produce Planetes (which could not possibly be more different from this show) and Code Geass (which, on some level, might be seen as Gasarakis spiritual successor - it takes on a lot of the same fundamental themes as Gasaraki, just from a different viewpoint).

This series provides examples of:
* Abnormal Ammo (the Plastic Rounds used in the TA's 25mm machine guns for riot suppression, the gun is also switched to single shot when using them, )
Line 25 ⟶ 24:
* Big Damn Heroes: The TA squad does this once to rescue Yushiro; Yushiro also attempts this a few times -- it rarely works.
* Big Fancy House: Which has The Thing That Goes Doink, naturally.
* Big Screwed -Up Family: The Gowa clan.
* Bishonen
* Bond Creatures: The Kugai.
Line 52 ⟶ 51:
* Follow the Leader (The entire show's been accused of ripping roughly a good three-quarters of its concepts and plot directly from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Exactly how much this is true has been hotly debated over the years; while there are some very obvious similarities (the clear comparisons between SEELE and SYMBOL, the dysfunctional-family-exploiting-a-son-as-a-pilot dynamic, Miharu's apparent similarities to Rei Ayanami, and the "divine" origins of the key systems of the mecha) the show does take a fairly different direction in the end, with somewhat different messages about the meaning of family and honor and a take on love that wholly contradicts some of Evas Freudian assertions.)
* Foreign Language Theme (The opening theme, "Message #9")
* For Science! (Kiyotsugu's MO)
* Generation Xerox (as the flashback shows, )
* Genre Savvy (Miharu is very aware that Symbol (and by extension Gowa) views her and Yushiro as a means to an end)
* A God Am I ( Kazukiyo)
* Good Hair, Evil Hair (Kazukiyo has Slicked-Back Hair, easily identifying him as evil)
* Good Samaritan ( Wan)
* Good Scars, Evil Scars (Nishida has a horizontal scar that goes across the bridge of his nose and over both his eyelids, from where he cut his own eyes out.)
* Heroic BSOD (Miharu has one 2/3rds into the series; )
* Heroic Bystander (when first introduced, Wan appears to be one of these )
Line 87 ⟶ 86:
** Also the idea of using unmanned flying/gliding drones for reconnaissance.
*** And the US being almost crippled by an economic collapse.
* Official Couple: Yushiro and Miharu, also doubling as Star -Crossed Lovers for quite a while.
* The Ojou: Misuzu.
* Only a Flesh Wound: .
Line 100 ⟶ 99:
* Real Robot
* Really Seven Hundred Years Old: Yushiro, Miharu, and Phantom
* Ripped Fromfrom the Headlines: The Belgistan invasion is blatantly reminiscent of the first Iraq war -- "Desert Storm" -- and its coverage on CNN.
* Screw Destiny: Yushiro.
* Senseless Sacrifice ( )
Line 118 ⟶ 117:
** Miharu wears one of the female-style masks, probably the Ko-omote (young woman). There are seven or so variations of this mask with different names. The difference between most of them is the styling of the hairline.
** The Kai-summoned units have faces patterned after the Hannya masks.
* Well -Intentioned Extremist (Nishida)
* With Great Power Comes Great Insanity (the test pilots for the Type 17I suffer nasty side effects from the Psycho Serum they're given in the cockpit.)
* Who Wants to Live Forever? ( Phantom.)
* You Gotta Have Teal Hair (Miharu)
