If you think about it, there are a lot of suspicious unanswered questions. I'd be very interested in seeing what Smitty looks like in Annie's etherial vision, but so far he has been conveniently elsewhere...
* Smitty certainly does have "access to the ether", just not in the same way as Antimony, or Anja, or Paz, or Jenny. But then, they don't work like each other, either. Antimony eventually learned to see what he does, and Jeanne even counteracted, if in a limited way.
