The game will have no idea how to handle the situation, and effectively freeze. (In ''Sonic 3 & Knuckles'', if Tunnelbot is defeated offscreen in this way, the camera will promptly scroll right, pushing Sonic within bounds of Act 2 before the signpost lands.)
