* Ivan Vorpatril of Vorkosigan Saga is somewhat like this. He is no saint and in fact calls common born people [[Fantastic Caste System|proles]](though only as a generic; he does not particularly look down on those commoners he actually sees). But he is loyal and helpful even to total strangers and certainly to friends, though not without grumbling. His chief goal in life is to live it as comfortably as he can, but he is not going to let that get in the way of friendship or patriotism or simple kindness.
