The Man in the Iron Mask is a 1998 film adaptation of The Vicomte De Bragelonne (1847-1850) by Alexandre Dumas. The original serial novel was a sequel to The Three Musketeers. The film was the first directed by Randall Wallace, previously known for writing Braveheart. The main stars were Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gabriel Byrne, Gerard Depardieu and Anne Parillaud.

The year is 1662. Gone are Cardinal Richelieu (died 1642) and Louis XIII of France (died 1643). France is ruled by Louis XIV (DiCaprio), son of his predecessor. He is a militarist who is already bankrupting the country with unpopular wars. Privately, Louis follows a hedonistic lifestyle and keeps many mistresses. Meanwhile, the peasants of Paris are starving and a food riot begins. Louis XIV commands one of his advisors to send rotten food to the rioters. The riot stops, the people get sick and the advisor is executed for "his" crime.

* Weird Moon: Just after he's been freed from the prison for the first time, Philippe can't sleep and ends up at the window gazing at the full moon that he had struggled to hard to see while in prison. The moon is huge. Doubles as a Melancholy Moon given the poignancy of the emotions in the scene.
* Villainous Breakdown: Louis has multiple. The first sign is when word comes to him that Phillipe is dead. At first he's relieved, since his brother isn't a threat to his throne anymore. Yet for curiosity sake he tries the mask on himself. As soon as the mask touches his face, he flips out and throws it away from him. Showing he fears the mask more than it's wearer. During the masquerade ball, invoked by the three musketeers and Phillipe himself, they pose as partygoers using a replica of the mask underneath their costumes to appear and disappear in front of him. Naturally he's freaked out, but due to his duties as king and secrecy, he can't show fear or explain why to his subjects. He leaves the ballroom to rest and take his mind off if, when the three Musketeers come and knock him out. When he comes too, Athos, who is finishing dressing Phillipe up as Louis, refers to Louis as "Phillipe" much to his confusion. After they get caught, D'Artagnan violently negotiates a prisoner exchange. Freeing Louis and giving Phillipe back to them. The second his gag is off, Louis freaks out and in both panic and rage, orders the guards to seize Phillipe. Not even caring about the other three escaping. His breakdown continues when he realizes, his mother knew of the plot and tries to save face by claiming she didn't love them both. When Phillipe retorts, Louis slaps him. After D'Artagnian restrains and calms him down, he tries to negotiate with Louis to spare Phillipe. Seemingly calming him. When Phillipe begs for death, rather than going back to the Bastille. Louis flips out again demanding that he wear the mask until he loves it and dies in it. However it turns out Phillipe was bluffing and buying time for the other three to rescue him.
