The Germans assumed that there's some Jews hiding up there. Once they get the attic open and one guy clambers up to take a look. There's at least twenty people up there, all of them Jewish. What did the volunteer do? ''Climbs down and says that there's no one''. If anyone else had looked, he would've been in deep shit, but as it happened, ''everyone in the attic survived to tell the tale''.
