Line 16:
* Base Breaker: Crow, Crow, Crow. Quite possibly the worst Base Breaker in the series, it's hard to find enough people who share opinions to come to a consensus on what they think he is and what he should be. Some people call him the Kamina of the series(Though most detractors say that the honor should go more to Jack). Others love him for what he is, the Large Ham of the cast. Still others call him a Canon Sue, citing his use of an archetype that's been a tournament staple in real life, the fact that he became a Signer , and the fact that he never shuts up as reason for being hated. This extends to just about any episode that revolves around Crow, to the point where, if you see Crow featuring prominently in an episode, there's bound to be an argument about it.
** Aki fits this to a minor degree. Either you love or hate her Backstory and Character Development.
* Best Known Forfor Thethe Fanservice: Downplayed example, but 5Ds has a bit of a reputation for having probably the most beautiful women in all of Yu-Gi-Oh!. Aki's an absolute eyecatcher in every regard, whether in her regular outfit or her Riding Duel suit, which just oozes sexiness. Misty's a supermodel with a very distinct elegant air. Carly appears to be a bit of a dork, but when the glasses go, there is every single proof that she's actually quite hot, especially so as her Dark Signer robes flatter her figure. Sherry has her moments as well, and while not really "sexy" in a traditional way there is just a bit of Bifauxnen in the way she carries herself while dueling for everyone who loves shorthaired women, and her boobs are actually fairly sizeable.
* Better on DVD: Especially when filler episodes can be skipped over and some can be treated as a bonus arc (Crashtown).
* Black Hole Sue: Crow's increased presence ended up warping the intended plot quite a bit. The story goes something like this: Crow was never intended to be a main character - he was a close friend to Yusei, but not a major part of the cast. After Blackwings started selling like hotcakes in Real Life, the Konami suits ordered the anime crew to make him a permanent member of the cast (so more Blackwings could be made, of course), and, as it turns out, Katsumi Ono had a soft spot for Crow. So while Crow isn't a Black Hole Sue in the context of the 5D's universe, he is one metatextually.
