- To whoever decided to book the famed John Lydon-led experimental art rock band Public Image Ltd. - a band who never troubled the US pop charts - to perform on the show in 1980.
- R.E.M.'s performance of "Radio Free Europe" in 1983, which more or less introduced millions of Americans to what would be called "Alternative Rock".
