Robert Anthony Eden 1st Earl of Avon KG MC PC was a British Conservative politician, who was Foreign Secretary during World War II. He was also Prime Minister from 1955 to 1957.
He was known world wide as an opponent of appeasement, a man of peace and a skilled diplomat. That is until, in the second year of his premiership he set in motion the Suez Crisis of 1956. During said Crisis he memorably said that "We are not in a War with Egypt. We are in an armed conflict with Egypt." After that, well, the phrase "worst prime minister of all time" is a familiar one. It crippled the UK's (until then massive) influence in the Middle East.
Tropes:
- America Saves the Day: Brutally Subverted, America's intervention in the Suez Crisis forced Eden to back down and killed his career.
- Epic Fail: The Suez Crisis.
