** Well, I'm not sure it's truly discredited. It's almost like a form of [[Disability Superpower]], where being blind is the superpower to befriend someone who is shunned despite being a nice person. It is pretty popular and pretty old, going back at least to Frankenstein, and I guess it's popular because it gives a way for a writer to have believable interaction between a 'hideous' character and an ordinary person. |
