His ultimate goal, protecting the present at the cost of the future, is because he believes that someday the future will be destroyed regardless of how hard he struggles for it, so he'd rather protect the present, even though he's destroying millions of lives to do so. So he doesn't believe in hope of the value of lives in the ''future'', however at the same time he is fighting for an altruistic (if distorted) goal to protect the lives of people in the present. It....doesn't have a happy ending for him.
