The Republic of Cyprus (''Kypriakī́ [[Dīmokrat Ã]]a'' in Greek/''Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti'' in Turkish) is an island in the Mediterranean. It gained independence from the UK in 1960. In 1974, Turkey invaded the north of Cyprus and the local Turkish Cypriots declared a separate state. For more on this still unresolved issue, see [[North Cyprus]].
